Listed Blog?

Kewl! I just found that my blog was listed among the "Interesting SG Blogs" on Singapore Entrepreneurs

How it got there, and who put it up, I have no clue, perhaps it's cos I'm linking to them, and someone traced the web referals to that site.

Hm... looks like total strangers have taken note of this blog... feeling rather uneasy about the implications... But hey, some guy at google's frequenting this blog, and another guy working on a phpeditor added me to his msn upon reading an entry on the blog and my website. so not so uncharted territory afterall...

Nottingham Games!

Just returned from Notts... Cold and windy it was... But a brilliant day for taking photos!

Ah, have yet to add captions to my photos. Realised that captions are as important as the pictures themselves, in telling the whole story... Will get down to captioning them one day, hopefully.

Walkabout

A glorious autumn's day today was, when I ended lectures at 11. Had my camera on hand, and an hour to my supervision. Decided to go on a snapping spree as I traversed my usual route from Quantum Mechanics lecture on Mill Lane Lecture Theater to supervision in Sidney Sussex.

We seldom stop to think about what drives people to lay those huge stones upon one another into these magnificent monoliths, and make such intricate carvings on them. Thought that all these were very much the results of a civilisation which had advanced to a stage where enough people were liberated from the need to toil the land to survive, to pursue such grand endeavours - in engineering, art, and the sciences. And in turn, these pursuits have paid off with even more effective ways to provide for our consumption, and hence allowing an average citizen like me to spend more than 22 years in education.

As I stepped into Sidney, I thought it a worthwhile pursuit to seek the fabled head of Oliver Cromwell. It took me round the college into a garden. Took some pictures there, but found no clues. Asked my supervisor later where the head was, and he told us that at any time, only two people were allowed to know it's exact whereabouts to prevent someone from trying to dig it up. But there was a plaque in the chapel indicating that the head was somewhere in the vicinity.

Cooking Hor Fun!

Have been cooking quite a bit lately... new dishes include chicken fried with the different coloured peppers, steam chicken, and chicken soup made with the bones.

Suddenly feel like eating hor fun after having it at jin ling's today... they sold it as hor fun, but it was more like fried kway tiao than hor fun... Recalled the way Te did it last time, and wanna try making it for myself now...

So, here it goes:
Ingredients:
Cabbage, carrot, small corn, beef, fish, and the kuey tiao itself.
+ garlic

Recipe:
Boil kwey tiao, then fry it in dark sauce.
Fry the beef and fish seperately.
Fry the cabbage in garlic, along with the carrot, and corn. Add lots of water, and all the different sauces - soy sauce, fish oil, seseme oil, oyster sauce, and lots of starch.
Add the beef and fish in,
Pour the gravy onto the kwey tiao.

yup, so think i'll do that for dinner next sunday :P

Update Update Update

Havent updated for a week now, kinda feel like I'm living out the lyrics from All Star in shrek

Well, the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Fed to the rules and I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb
So much to do much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow

Feel like I'm procrastinating many things til the holidays, including revision, blogging, playing ET, and helping some newly founded society with their webpage.

Have to sit down and properly record what's I've been up to the past few weeks. Many many many things, is all i can say now, fallin ill, guy fawke's night, hanging out, frisbee, cg, focus, physics society meetings, a bit of cooking, breakfast with aloysius and the caius people, labs with daryl, are some of the things that come to mind when i attempt to recall where my days went.

Oh yes, and ever since i succumbed to the flu bug a week ago, I've been converted from snacking on dark chocolate to snacking on apples, and drinking chrysanthemum. Also, sainsburry aint offering their muffins at 6 for 89p anymore, so will hafta look for an alternative to my diet of muffins.

Darn you openoffice.

Heh, i've given up hope on openoffice. I'm not sure if it's positively screwed, or it's just the interface that is counterintuitive. Just spent a hell load of time trying to get mailmerge to work, and I've since concluded that it doesn't work.

Did the same with the database querries module. To no avail.

Ah screw that. I'll just do the membership cards manually.

On a lighter note, was at darryl's room today before heading to the cms, and hung around with some mathmos. One of them, glancing through a newspaper, asked a question posed by an ad in the papers "what would you do with a hundred million pounds?". Quite an optimistic question to be pondering upon, a welcome break from all the unresolved questions that I'm currently bogged down with. My first response was to put 99 million of it in the bank, then think about how to spend the million pounds first.

Come to think of it, I'm quite contented with life as it is, and having a sudden increase in resources would not affect my career decisions or my lifestyle. It might alleviate the need to worry about having the means to survive in a certain profession, but it wont make me much happier.

Hoping that other things in life will go more smoothly. We're into the 4th week of term, and work is catching up - well into max gear since the second week. There's simply so much to cover in so little time. Hope the hols would allow me some time to digest the term's work.

Also just organising sunday morning breakfast for this sunday, and there seems to be quite an overwhelming response - about 9 people? Need to prepare for it tmr, and i hope my kitchen can house that many people.

Falling Ill

Just fighting to wake up in time for lectures this morning, with a sore pain behind the nose.

Think I've been too busy, and have been eating too much chocolate...

Need to slow down a bit, and quit those chocolate.

Take some vit c and drink more water.

Eye-Witness Account

Bleugh (throwing out bleugh)

Just witnessed a sickening accident tonight, walking back with chun from focus.

Guy (probably drunk) on bike slammed into a car at full speed.

Bike flew over the car, over a roadside barrier, a good ten meters into the grass.

Guy staggered away with shattered right leg. Ewww... Literally jelly like :S

Very very very grave reminder to ride carefully.

That guy shattered more than his leg - can imagine that he'll be spending at least the rest of term in bed.

A really great reminder that it's a blessing to have your body in one piece, and there's really so much one could lose. entropy knows no bounds.

Count your blessings people...

To my Singaporean Friends who've survived the 2.5 years...

...as well as all those who are destined to do so at some point in time.

Enjoy that!

Update on the week

I've been kinda busy, since i returned, to blog, and to properly reflect on the things I've done.

Just came back from church, with a heap of example sheets beside me, but nothing much else on my mind besides the thought of settling the archims membership cards, which I think I'd be able to do later today.

Quite an eventful week the past one was. In a nutshell:
Tuesday - Fresher's formal
Friday - Cell, and shooting stars!
Saturday - Oxbridge games at Oxford.

Cumsa Fresher's Formal
this year was a contrast with the one we had last year. The food at Pembroke was great, and the freshers this year are quite fun to be with, a few gamers, and a few with common background in army, as well as aloysius. So life's much more comfortable this year.

Could not help but recollect my own fresher experience at Cumsa events last year, while i was taking in this year's events. The contrast encapsulated in the following two pictures.

A year later/back...
Kenny, me, and the freshers

This time, we weren't chased out for someone among us behaving inappropriately by a racist waiter - our exit was much more civilised, ending similarly with a group picture!

Another before and after photo:

Today/Yesterday

Cell
Had the regular cell on Friday. Cell started with 3 people, cos the freshers could not make it on time for a variety of reasons. But it was nice to end the week with dinner, and feeling a sense of familiary with the people around. Fridays and mondays are especially hectic for me cos of labs, I almost feel like a participant in the amazing race after lectures, having so many things to do, and with such little time -
lecture ends at 1 pm, return to college for lunch, and squeeze enough time to relax for 5 minutes over coffee. Then rushing off to the cavendish for lab, 4 hours of it! Lab ends at 6, rush to the CMS to print and photocopy song sheets, then to daryl's room to check that things are ok and deposit things, and back to my room to retrieve the guitar, and back to daryl's room in time for cell at 7 pm.
Mondays are similar, with cell being subsituted for CF.

Shooting stars!!!
We were informed by a fresher at cell, doing a masters, who came from princeton, that the orionids were occuring and that night was a particularly good time to watch it, cos there was no moon. A few of us made our way to jesus green to watch it, well, I spotted one, and celeen spotted another in a span of 10 minutes, waited another 10 but didn't see any more, so we went home. But each shreak was rather intense, and arced across a good 30 degrees of the sky, vis-a-vis the one i saw in australia while performing sentry duties, which appeared to cross only about an inch of the sky. It was similarly fleeting though, and one has to keep a constant lookout to spot them.

Oxbridge games
Went to oxford yesterday for the annual oxbridge games. Must applaud the effort and organisational ability of the committee for their detailed planning of the event - down to the last man, bus seat, and accomodation.

Got to hang out with aloysius for the first time in a long time! Toured round the town, and visited a history of science museum, and a few pics.

St John's College, Oxford
PS: Aloysius, Send me your pics!

The organizational effort taken by audry in putting this whole trip together brought to mind the logistical effectiveness of the saf while training in India - recall them supplying each soldier 8 bottles of mineral water a day, just because the water there wasnt fit for consumption. It was quite a pain on our side also, having everyday to carry that much water from the point they dropped the supplies off to our vehicles.

Yup, so that's the week. And just consolidating some of the thought's that have been floating around.

My new Favourite Sainsbury Products...

Sainsbury's Basics Dark Chocolate,

And Sainsbury's Double chocolate chip muffins.

Half a dozen muffins, and 200g of dark chocolate a day to supplement my intake of fat, sugar, and endorphines.

Essesential for keeping me happy, healthy and wise :P

Items I forgot

Heh, compiling a list of items i realised i forgot to bring over when i came this time round:

1) Long sleeved shirts
2) camera charger - I have the battery charger, means i can still use the camera, just a little inconvinient to charge.
3) I dont have as many singapore curry packets as i thought.
4) the kaya i left in the car.
5) having some textbooks permanently in my room would be nice, but i dont know if i should add anymore weight to the stuff I have to pack away when i vacate my room.

Other things on my mind:
Archims membership cards and mailing lists,
Cell worship.

Blog Blog Blog

KK, havent blogged in a while, for the reason that before today there's been nothing in my life worth mentioning.

But, something significant happened today... Had my first lab in a very very long time!

And it was also the first time I was soldering a circuit with full understanding of all the components, and it worked perfectly! And did I mention I love oscilloscopes? How I've always wished to plug the oscilloscope into everything around me, and I get to do just that during lab sessions! Yup, the picture above is that of the circuit I soldered together today, and the circuit diagram from my notes. It's called a "twin-T" by the way, and it filters out electronic waves of a particular frequency.

I also have a really good supervisor this year. He did a phd in physics, and he's now a full time supervisor. Having him for all 3 subjects - physics, advance physics and maths. And supervisions are very interest inducing, and stress relieving, cos he knows about things like string theory and particle physics, and is able to point out how some of the things we're currently covering is going to lead to those intriguing results. All these are signs that this year is going to be a particularly good year!

And had the first cell and CF session on friday and today. The freshers this year are really talented! - spontaneously filling the roles of leading worship - playing the piano and guitar, bible study, and also cooking and cleaning! It's as if there's been an injection of new life into the cell and cf.

And regarding the calander, it's just a matter of getting used to... just like the amount of detail one makes public on a blog.

sianzzzz

One week of lectures just concluded today, as well as my first supervision.

Sianess bug beginning to kick in.

Caused partly by failing to fulfill some of the goals I had hoped to achieve, and the little request made by my supervisior this morning for us to complete a certain number of questions by the next supervision, which is tomorrow, and which I dont see myself being able to achieve.

Not too worried though, cos dont think it's the beginning of a downhill path yet, should be able to catch up in the subsequent lectures... also, there's darryl!

Getting down to work

Heh, almost forgot how I used to attempt problems on a piece of rough paper before penning it down proper onto the foolscape paper, only after I've solved it, when I attended school back in Singapore.

Last year, I could not complete any questions properly anyway, so I just scribbled any attempt I made directly onto the foolscape paper. Felt an uneasy sense of incompleteness when I did the same this year :P

One Busy, fulfilling day

First packed saturday today was...

Beginning with a 9 am lecture,
Went to walk around town looking for laminating sheets we'll need to make membership cards, but couldn't find the ones needed. Nvm, will ask the previous registrar about it.

Went back to my room to do some work, 11 am.

Went to Shawn's place for bbq lunch, quite fun being in charged of the fire... And good bbq it was! The best food was bbq'ed garlic bread! The sainsburry basics, but very nice!

Then went for squash, nothing very much there, so many new faces :S

Went to yijin's room, with fellow natscis :P

Went for frisbee at 4 plus,

Came back to make dinner, Egg Mayo sandwich!
Just trying out the recipe so that can make it on my lab days, of which I have two a week.

Boiled 3 eggs, and a huge tablespoon full of mayonese, mashed it up, and it spreads quite generously on 4 slices of bread plus some excess. Works out way cheaper than the 1.10 pounds egg mayo sandwiches cost in sains.

Now going for coding session at shawn's place, I hope we get somewhere tonight :D

Also thinking of cataloguing the excess items I have. Many times I'm looking for an item, and they come with an offer, and i find myself buying much more than i need. WHSmith basics pens for example. Hope to get down to it soon.

Things to do

Ok, I've now fulfilled the bulk of my duties as the archims registrar, with the conclusion of the fair and the squash...

Still have to sort out the remaining of the archims stuff, before getting on with work, and the game we're creating!

Commitments this year in order of importance (for now at least):
1) Archimedeans,
2) CG,
3) Game coding,
4) Work.

Alright, that'll be it for now... juggling many things at the moment, but it beats getting bored :P

Back in Cambridge.

It's been a busy week - travelling back, settling in, setting up the internet connection, preparing for the societies fair, cooking for freshers, paying the bills, etc. Finally getting the time to seat down to blog about it.

Don't really feel like putting in the effort to narrate everything, so since a picture's worth a thousand words, I'll just subsitute the narration with pictures.

The Flight Back!

Unpacking

Unpacked by Friday,
Had a cookout for the freshers on Saturday,
Archims meeting and Empheram meeting on Sunday,
Settled the banking and school fees on Monday,
Fresher's Fair on Tuesday, got internet connection, and a reduced-to-clear cookout after the fair,
Fresher's fair concluded today, had introductory lecture at the Cavendish.

I've also got a very interesting fresher living with me this year. By Sunday, I returned to a freshly baked cake in the kitchen! And he's got a very unique fashion sense - vaguely approximated by a cross between Kim Jong Il and a metrosexual. :P

Internet Finally UP!!!

After close to a week of communications blackout, I've finally restored my internet connection!!!

Lots of things happenning since I arrived! Blog about it soon, hopefully :P

Coming Full Circle

Then

Now

Headed back to Cambridge in a few hours time, exactly one year after my maiden pilgrimage - same flight number, same departure timing, but with different people - with me playing the senior this time round.

Will be seated with Foo Yee and Aloysius, two Mathmos! Muahahahaha! I'm anticipating a very enjoyable 13 hour flight back! :P

Have been waking up to the sight of my suitcase at the corner of my room the past few eye-shuts. Such visual stimulus upon a dreamy state occassionally evokes flashbacks to the emotions I had a year back.

I recall a situation of excitement coupled with uncertainty. An excitement relived by Aloysius, brought about from the sudden realisation of the significance of the moment. And uncertainty, the uncertainty of my cause, of not knowing why I made the decision to take such a huge leap into the unknown without a safety harness. The uncertainty of what to expect, and the uncertainty of whether I was going to make it out alive.

Now one year on, the excitement and uncertainty had been replaced with a cautiously optimistic resolve. Knowing what to expect, the opportunities available, and being mentally prepared to face the challenges. I no longer question the wisdom of my decision like I did at the pivotal moment a year back, instead, I'm thinking of what I can do with the options I have, and make the most out of it.

And in that sense, I am rather optimistic because the opportunities my situation offers is quite boundless. Just praying that I'd be able to utilise it well.

And as reflected by the seasoned state of my belongings, I am now a veteran of this pilgrimage.

Numbered Days & Personality Tests

Spent the last few days of the hols catching up with the people whom I wont be meeting for another year!

Had lunch with the cf people at holland v on monday afternoon. Said goodbye to daniel. It's quite sad parting with people whom you've just gotten to know well, and whom you've done many things together, and you're just beginning to relate with. A mere year after knowing them. Guess this is part of growing up... People in your adult life come and go really frequently, and it is indeed the guys you went to secondary school with who will remain your best buddies. Managed to meet with my sec sch scouts friend that evening.

Tsang, varun and shamir... Part of the 99-mil plc. Just realised that night that it's been ten years already, since the time when we were blur scouts recruits! What happened between then and now seemed a gaping void! I can map a word onto each of those 10 years -

1997: SAS sec1; 1998: SAS sec2; 1999: SAS sec3; 2000: SAS sec4; 2001: SAJC J1; 2002: SAJC J2; 2003: NS; 2004: NS; 2005: NS; 2006: Uni year1; 2007.

But those words just do not seem to account for ten years of life!

Had quite varied conversation topics that dragged 5 hours til 3 am that morning. A good part of the time, we were talking about people - those we came across along the way, like in army, as well as people we know from our scouting days. The conversation meandered into a discussion of personality traits, with Tsang and Shamir discussing personality tests like MBTI, etc... I was reminded of a personality test I had taken back in 2003 as part of the dsta selection process, and went up to my room to dig the report up.

Three years on, I had found the personality test a really accurate assessment of my character, and have realised that the problems I had faced had sometimes been a direct consequence of my personality and the situation.

DISC
Found the report so accurate that I'm going to type out parts of the report onto this entry.
Dominance 2 10 -8
Influence 3 7 -4
Steadiness 7 2 5
Conformity 7 2 5

And the subsequent descriptions and suggestions were really insightful and helpful.

    GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
  • Sets both himself and others extremely high standards.
  • A perfectionist with an innate need to get things right.
  • Can tie up the loose ends and see an assignment through to conclusion.
  • Likes to be part of a specialist/technical/administrative team.
  • Prefers the security of a structured working environment where the work parameters are clearly defined.
  • Non-aggressive, dislikes conflict, trouble, hassle or having to make harsh or unpopular decisions.
  • Works in an organised and systematic manner in order to reach the 'perfect' solution to problems and assignments.
  • Prepared to follow systems, rules and procedures.
  • Needs time to adjust to change; prefers the status quo.
  • Can appear reserved and serious; builds relationships slowly on trust.
  • Can become defensive if become threatened or criticised.

    APPROPRIATE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Developing skills in a specialist/technical/administrative area of competence and expertise.
  • Providing a service to others.
  • Working persistently in order to complete assignments.
  • Absorming detail and gathering facts and information befor taking action.
  • Following direction and operating under controlled circumstances.
  • Assessing situation logically.
  • Analysing and researching specialist/technical information.

In italics are the lines that struck me as very accurate. Had previously thought that these kind of personality tests were simply restating the very things you told them in the tests, but realised the an insight is a statement of the obvious which one does not take much notice of. And this report has proven very insightful.

Singapore Dreaming

Went to watch it with shian today at cineleisure. Portrays the struggles and discontentment faced by a working class Singapore family. Puts many things in perspective, like the reality that contentment is quite independent of your social status or the amount of wealth one has.

Also, a clip i found on youtube today:

Anyway, time to start packing, and planing for the pilgrimage back to cambridge.

End of yet another chapter

Went back today to complete my project report, closing yet another chapter. Had to wait over the weekend for the simulation to churn out the results.

Me at my desk, and Dr Liu Ping and I at the terminals to the supercomputer

Had blogged in the previous entry about all I've gained from this internship. It's been a great exposure to the world of simulation and research. Thank God for this opportunity, think it's helped change my outlook for the better.

Went down to suntec to meet shamir, quite interesting all the activity happening because of the IMF meetings. Suntec was literally turned into a fortress! The parameter fencing and the police presence evoked feelings of how authoritarian a state Singapore is, but because of that it's able to pull off something so grand on such a large scale. Think if the world were one country, Singapore has all the administration, infrastructure, and manpower to be the world capital! Just from the density of the luxury vehicles within the area, makes a powerful statement of our prosperity. There were BMW's for the delegates, the regular Mercedes taxis, plus the normal share of such vehicles on our roads, it was quite an awesome atmosphere.

Also celebrated Serene's birthday yesterday, and my departure, this time with a new addition to the family! Hm... This period of time really feels like a repeat of last year! Including the ride back in daniel's car after the cf bbq, and the bouquet of flowers.

Ok, just randomly blabbering the stuff I'm feeling dejavu about.

But there's a little difference this time: two more weeks left, and I know what I'm in for, I know people over in Cambridge. I'm kinda anticipating next year, with a bit of apprehension. A better situation than this time last year when I did not feel any genuine anticipation about the transition at all. Hopefully this is indication that things will turn out better this time round.

Geeky Adventures

Have been messing around with geeky stuff lately.

Set up an apache and ftp server on my home desktop, and configured my router so that I can definitely access the computer when it's on. Ftp'ing stuff back and forth from the supercomputer inspired me to successfully set up the ftp server :P

Also installed Java, and compiled my first java program last night. Gonna get eclipse, a Integrated Development Environment for Java, soon. Reading up on the principles of Object Oriented Programing, as well as Networking with Java.

Also been setting up my new laptop, installing all the programs I need. It's the first time I'm owning a new computer all by myself, and I'm taking note of every single thing I've installed.

Switched to Open Office, cos it's free and legal, and it's proven as useful as Microsoft Office with regards to the basic features like opening files, and editing them.

Wrapping Things Up

The guys I hang out with for lunch

I'm currently at work, putting the final touches on the report, and waiting for the simulation to churn out the last of the data I'd require to conclude the project, and hoping to be able to complete a decent report by thursday, so that I'd be able to take away something nice from this internship.

Guess it's a good time to review the things I've done this summer and at IHPC.

Looking back at the past few months, I realise that I've gained tremendously in the following areas:

1) Simulation

Having no background in simulation, the experience of working with simulation programs and codes has vastly added to my knowledge in this area.

I now better understand what simulation entails. Learnt of:
- the existence of the range of methods employed to solve various simulation problems (i.e. Quantum Mechanics, Molecular Dynamics, and Finite Element Method), as well as
- the principles behind computer simulation (that the main challenge of performing simulation is modeling a situation in a way that yields accurate results yet minimizes the amount of calculations required).

Dr Liu Ping attempted to educate me on the Finite Element Method at the beginning of the internship. While the actual calculations still elude me, I now understand how structural simulation is approached – that an object is modeled by elements, and that the data defining the object is stored as an array of nodes and elements.

I was also very impressed by the program Dr Liu Ping gave me to work with. I never knew that the simulation of such a complex process can be done with just a few kilobytes of code – and there were no libraries used!

2) Workings of IHPC and Research Life

This internship is also my first encounter with research life. I was initially not used to the great amount of autonomy, but I gradually learnt to pursue the things that were on my mind each day, and to make use of the opportunities available to further my understanding on a range of topics.

I also gained an insight into how research collaboration is considered and initiated, when I sat through a meeting discussing such a prospect of collaboration. During the meeting, I had learnt of the limits of simulation and the challenges involved in simulating certain genre of problems like detonation. I now better appreciate the difficulties encountered in simulation work.

This internship also saw my first attempt at writing a research paper style report, an albeit short one.

3) Quantum Dot Production

When I begun looking around for internships, I was hoping to be involved in the area of quantum computing, as it is a field that puts to use some of the recently discovered physics phenomena. Though it was not exactly quantum computing, working on quantum dots at a computing research institute seemed an exciting prospect too.

My personal goal after I accepted the internship offer was to understand the problems associated with producing the kind of quantum dots which would be needed in the implementation of a quantum computer.

I have learnt that the main challenge with fabricating quantum dots is finding an effective manufacturing method, of which Heteroepitaxy was a promising technique. Had also found that quantum dots were already being produced using other techniques, but the techniques available is still quite laborious.

It looks like a matter of time and research effort before an effective method of producing quantum dot array is found, and I reckon it will not be the factor that poses much hindrance to the development of quantum computers.

Other Accomplishments

During this time, I have also achieved a number of things outside the jurisdiction of IHPC.

I had implemented the website of a society I was webmaster of, read up on some of the topics I would be doing in next year’s course, took 5 students for tuition, and made contact with the Quantum Information Group at NUS.

Each of these has been a source of much fulfillment, and I have to confess that it helped me tide over the periods of boredom whenever I got stuck in the project.

Ok, the above might sound a little politically correct, and impersonal. I had meant to address it to my superiors, but I'm still questioning the wisdom of doing that. But that's about a wrap of what I've done this summer. Felt that i had quite an enriching time...

Yes! Successfully Set Up FTP Server!

In the process of transfering all my files from the old laptop to the new laptop through my main desktop computer, using ftp!!!

It was the firewall blocking the ports all along.

Now I can access my home computer from Cambridge if i wished. But it might not be very secure, and if the router reassigns the desktop IP address, then GG.

Update

Hm... haven't blogged in a while.

The past week has been... routine, having gone back to work.

Still fun though. Begun hanging out with colleagues. Finding out how life is like as a permanent researcher. Quite a nice bunch of people actually.

Friday 010906:
Met up with james at nus for lunch yesterday.

Thursday 310806:
There was some competition happening at IHPC involving the JC's on thursday. Met the SAJC team, of which I knew one of the participants and one of the teachers.

Also went for a quantum computing seminar organised by the quantum information group. Like their informal atmosphere - there was a gigantic linux penguin in their office! Saw people I had read of online, and Dr Ekert arrived after. Hope to be more involved with this group in future.

Wednessday 300806:
Also sat through a meeting in IHPC where they discussed the viability of engaging in a partnership on a certain project. Quite an insightful experience into the process of how colleborations are initiated.

Ok maybe my week wasnt routine. Packed should be a better word to use.

Also had tuition on those evenings.

And yes,
Saturday 260806:
Cumsa fresher's bbq at my house!

And on a random note, searching "cumsa" on google blogsearch now returns a few more results, including the blogs of some of this year's freshers. :P

Sunday 270806:
Went to play dota with sam and friends. Think i wanna train dwarvian sniper. Thinking of installing dota on my new laptop. :D

Today 020906:
Trying to get my ftp server up and running, made some progress, but still cant seem to connect to it from the other computers.

Ok, a very unorganised documentation of the days since i last posted.

Visiting SA

Went back to SAS with john, weihong, and a few of his friends today.

Quite a fruitful morning, from the number of people we met.
Bumped into Lawrence Koh when i first entered, met up with John and the gang, met two relief teachers, one of which was the school captain for the year before me, walked through the staff room to find it quite void of teachers, proceeded to the HOD office, and met Mr Koh Yong Mong outside, no teachers in the HOD office either. Decided to make our way round the classrooms. Met the first teacher we met was Mrs Singh, sec 1 history teacher. Then Mrs Huang, the dreaded mrs huang, our sec 1 lit teacher. These teachers didn't seem to change one bit... As the joke goes, they were 65 years of age when we were in sec one, and now they are still 65 years old.

Proceeded up a few floors to the maths section, met Mrs Goh, but i wasnt taught by her so... Followed by Mrs Yeo, ever doing maths questions. She was pondering how to set up te seven bridge problem as a display at the school's learning fair this sat... Made our way back down to the hod office, and met Mdm Jaya along the way. She allowed us into the office where we met Mr Au Yong, and Micheal lim who is now acting vice principal no. 2, Goh Boon Pin who is vice principal no. 1, and Mrs Charles, the P. Chatted, but somewhat superficially i had felt.

And to top it all off, we finally found Mrs Yeo (the chem one) in the staff room.

Went down to Orchard Road for lunch with John. Good time of catching up, actually I havent felt like really good friends with him until today. Related the our overseas experiences with each other, exchanging and comparing notes. Reflected on our NS days, as well as our sec sch and jc life. Quite a refreshing conversation it was.

Proceeded to Funan to get laptop and printer. Now gotta transfer all my stuff to the new laptop and assimilate it into my life.

  • Yep, quite a fulfiling week.

Hung out with our old cell group, and the guys I grew up with, last monday night at ken's birthday.

On tuesday suddenly felt like had been working for too long, and needed a break. So asked for leave, and it was approved without any fuss. Knocked off at lunch time, and hung around ps and j8, looking for laptops.

Had a good lunch with shian on wednessday. Good chat. Crystalised some thoughts.

Took a rest on thursday, and went to j8 to get the memiors of lky. a most engaging read, especially having experienced cambridge.

Went down to funan to buy the laptop on friday.

    Attended Confluence on saturday.

Attended G2 opening on sunday, and watched the rally speach.

Took a good rest today, monday, and went for a hair cut.

Going to meet teachers at SA tmr (tuesday) with john fu and friends.

And returning to work on wednessday! Refreshed.

The Value of Experience. Entry 3.

Experience comes in many forms. Every first hand encounter with the world is an experience, coming from daily life, or from extraordinary events like going on tours, or participating in activities, like playing games.

One may also obtain experience through secondary means, such as from stories - both from books and the TV shows, and from school - the subjects taught at school expose students to many existing models of the world.

An experience is just an instance of the world.

    Experiences and World Model
With these experiences, we build our world model. Some may be simplistic, like by retaining a set of common experiences as anecdotes to compare situations that pops up against. But over time, and as the set of experiences you would want to consider burgeons, it might not be so easy to crawl over whenever one tries to make a comprehensive decision.

So one might notice similiarities from the experiences and draw up a set of principles from which these experiences might be deduced. These principles might produce even more results than the experiences observed so far, and if it proves correct, it would serve to reinforce the credibility of the set of principles.

This almost sounds like the scientific method, but it applies quite generally as well. Afterall, scientific theories are but a model which people utilise to view the world.

    A Coherent Model
A model has to be coherent, i.e. it has to be consistent within itself, otherwise it is confused, and will serve no purpose whatsoever. In maths, it would have proven itself false by the notion of contradiction.

For example, an inconsistent model could be one beginning with the notion that logic does not exist, hence it follows that nothing in the world can be explained.

There are more subtle and technical examples, but think I shan't bore the audience.

    Domain of a Model
Beyond being coherent, the value of a model is derived from the domain of it's application. The more situations a certain model can explain, the more comprehensive it is. If one model can explain everything another model explains, and more, the second model will be superceded by the other.

    Accuracy of a Model
And appart from the size of it's domain, the value of a model also comes from it's ability to predict outcomes accurately.

The Value of Experience. Entry Two.

What I am trying to do is to identify a common methodology which people use to handle the experiences they undergo.

Ok, I am actually basing this observation on one particular sample, that is myself. But guess everyone would process their experiences with some degree of similarity to me.

    A World Model
Guess what happens is that everyone has his view of the world, a model which he uses to explain the phenomena occuring around him. And every experience he goes through, he would compare what he observes with the model he has. Most times, his experience should not vary very much from this model. But when the model is incapable of explaining what he is experiencing, such a situation would be considered shocking.

I myself have experienced periods of times when my model of the world couldn't explain my observation of it. It occured each time I entered a drastically different phase of life. Like when I entered army, going overseas to study, and each time I switched school. The more drastic a change it was, the less the model of my world then could explain the new observations.

Why would we need our model of the world to fit observations? It's because we inevitably have to make decisions, and we base our decisions on the model we have constructed based on our past experiences. We then run simulations of the various options we have available, in order to attempt to predict what is the best course of action to take. And when this model appears to fail us, we then have nothing more concrete to base our actions on, and thus feel vulnerable.

The Value of Experience. Entry One.

    ex·pe·ri·ence
    n. The apprehension of an object, thought, or emotion through the senses or mind
Just trying to make sense of the impression of past experience, i.e. memories, that this conciousness is attempting to graple with.

Dont really know how to introduce this entry, but these are a few questions I've been pondering that begged this contemplation about experience.

    1) What is the point of travelling? What is the point of pursuing intense experiences when memories of the experience would fade anyway?

    2) What is the point of education? And the point of learning something abstract that you may never use later on in life?

    3) How does one reconcile differing opinion, when every person possesses a unique set of believes? What makes one sure of his believes, and is there an absolute scale upon which we can compare who is right when there are differing opinions?

    Taking a Break

Just felt like it would be good to take a breather, 5 weeks into my attachment here.

Would give me time to do some things which have been accumilating, these are:
    • Arranging the Archims Stuff,
    • Preparing the bible study for CCCF,
    • Meeting up with Shian,
    • Working on my new webpage,
    • Casting in words reflection on the value of experience, and how to reconcile differences in opinion,
    • Reading up on next year's physics material,
    • Buying a laptop,
    • Taking stock of things, begin packing, &
    • Perhaps get started on the Java program.

But would still like to pay a visit to the quantum information group at NUS, and continue working with the simulation of quantum dot formation a little bit more.

    Home Improvement

Thinking of addling a little control panel to this blog, with links to websites i frequent, and the exchange rates monitor.

I'll put that in place of the meteorological report, which is getting kinda unsightly.

    Online CV

Thinking of creating a webpage to keep track of the notable things I've been up to, sorta like an online cv.

    An idea.

    National Day Update.

Ok, have been neglecting this blog lately as I channel my online efforts to the CCCF Website.

Work's ok... Been learning up on some simulation programs.

Had wanted to work on the networking portion of the game today with the National Day holiday, but it's quit difficult to get started on Java.

Need to organise the Archims Societies fair booth soon. Email some guy for display items, and begin to consolidate the people who have volunteered to help, and find out exactly how long the time the fair will last - at first glance guess it'll be 8 hours a day. Means at least 16 volunteers.

Have been pondering a lot about experiences lately. Like what meaning is there to having done so much in life that you begin to lose track of the lessons you learn, as the memories fade. And about the purpose of pursuing intense experiences like going on tours and stuff. Especially now that I am trying hard to acquire practical experiences to hopefully build up a 'library' of exposures that I'd be able to draw upon in future.

Also some food for thought -
While watching NDP today, during the tribute to S Rajaratnam, Serene made a remark "I wonder what the first national day without Lee Kwan Yew would feel like." Quite a compelling thought indeed. Guess it would be a solemn affair, to the likes of someone being missing from the dinner table.

An Update & Consolidation of my Current Pursuits

Had been resolved, upon returning home, not to waste any bit of my time here in Singapore, and have since involved myself in many activities. Just a list of what I've gotten myself into, along with some of ambitions.

    Physics:
    • Learn Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics, and how they are derived from newton’s laws.
    • Learn thermodynamics, and the derivations.
    • Eventually learn quantum mechanics.
    Programing:
    • Casually messing with php, javascript on the cccf website and my own blog.
    • Just picked up fortran – not too difficult. Seen how a scientific program is created, quite interesting and simple actually.
    • Downloaded Visual Basic and Visual C++ from the msdn website, but think I’ll ditch that for the moment in favour of Java.
    • Going to pick up Java and help Shawn with the development of the game. Working on the networking bit, think it’s gonna be really enriching!
    • Thinking of installing a cms on the srcf account to serve as my personal webpage. The old ones are quite out of date, and I’m having problems logging on to edit them.
    Work:
    • Playing around with commercial simulation programs on the supercomputer, and trying to learn up on finite element technique.
    • Taking a few students for tuition. Think I’m not that effective a teacher if I do not have time to prepare what I’m going to teach, which is the case now.
    Others:
    • Also trying to pick up the guitar, and have been involved in the youth choir lately.
    • I'm thinking of getting a good laptop, now that I'm going to use it for some solid programing. Think I'll begin looking around for it, and get a new laptop by next summer.

    whoops!

    I hung a supercomputer today...

    London and Italy Album

of our trip to London, Greenwich, Venice, and Rome.

    Google Geek?

Having worked at a-star, and having discovered microsoft offering their Visual Basic Package for free has caused me to feel that there's actually hope in this world for the average geek.

These few weeks of internship at a-star allowed me to experience working in an autonomous research environment. I'm now even more keen to be part of other such highly unstructure organisations, especially one that greatly successful, yielding astonishing results.

Yes, and google is one such organisation, I've have been eyeing this one for a while now.

And if I were allowed the liberty of opinion, I'd say a good project which can be developed would be one catering to the needs of the info and power hungry geek species across the globe. A project that would help aspiring geeks at all levels to find what they are looking for quicker, and perhaps provide these geeks a medium to further their pursuits, by providing free server space for example. How that will make money, i'm not too sure, but google seems to be making money out of giving away freebies to the world!

    If I were a googler.

    HCH!!! Check this out!!!

The answer to your problem!!! It's every Wannabe Hacker's dream come true :P

I might just reacquaint myself with Visual Basic again!

    Muahahahaha

This is microsoft acknowledging the potency of open source! The world is becoming a better place indeed :P

To HCH: Reminicing my Visual Basic Days.

hch! I'm afraid I don't possess a vb compiler. I recalled the last time I got the vb compiler, it was through some kind soul I met on a forum who put the setup.exe file on his server for download.

That was a long time ago, and I've since lost it, actually it screwed up on me after awhile... (And it wasn't really functional as there was no convinient help feature when you hit F1 on a function.) Perhaps you could try asking around some forums and see if anyone is willing to help you. Anyone with the open source spirit would gladly help you if they could!

Otherwise, move on to genuine open source! But it's hard to find a subsitute for vb though...

Recollecting memories of my minesweeper solver, and my SMM days with foo yee...

    Another week at work

It's Tuesday already, again! Guess I'll reflect on my week every Tuesday, since the general timetable of my stint here is also planned out by the week.

    Highlights of this week:
    - Got the trial website up and running, and it should be ready for implementation by the weekend, after a 3 day allowance for beta-testing. If you'd like to help out, please visit, register, and go use the features!

    - got a tour round the supercomputer housed in ihpc. Now I'm quite curious to find out exactly what it takes to carry out accurate simulations, and how to harness massive computing power effectively.

    - Met up with foo yee! Quite excited that he'll be at imperial next year. He's one of the few maths buddies I have, and I've realised that they are hard to come by, even in a place like Cambridge.

    - Have been hanging out at the NUS Science Library after lunch the past week, read up on hilbert spaces.

    - Need to submit my Second Week Report soon. Quite looking forward to watching Fortran 90 in action, and to seeing the process of simulating a process from scratch!

    - Going to watch Pirates of the Carrebean with the CF people tonight.

    CCCF Website - Update

    Alrighty,

the trial CF Website is up!

    Visit it here!

Shain, go see what you can do about the asthetics! Main thing is the banner, but I could do with nice icons for the news articles, and a picture for the welcome panel.

HCH, this is the path my php endeavour is taking me. There's challenge in administering a nice php site - need not always build it from scratch!

Yup, finally sorted the database problem, time to see how fast this plane can fly!

    CCCF Website

I've been preoccupied with doing up the CF website lately.

Eyeing the CMS called php-fusion, can test it here.

A comprehensive handbook on php-fusion, from installation to administration to creating mods.

A very elegant and well developed CMS, I felt.

This is the template I intend to adapt for the CF website. Need opinion if it's suitable. Found it on php-fusion themes.

Like it cos of my preference for light, sky-blue colours.

A bit stuck on the MySQL username and password verification, having similar problems with the srcf. But think things should get off the ground once I've solved that problem.

Also engaging Shian to do the banner, using the cccf logo. We'll see how this goes.

    A week of work

It's been a week since I started my internship, and everyday's been PACKED!

It's good, cos I'm forced to make full use of the free hours remaining - that includes lunch hours and after office hours.

Have been arranging to meet everyone nearby for lunch / after office hours dinners + hang out sessions. And also bumped into some of my peers studying at nus now.

On top of that, also taken a few tuition students. Leaves me with even fewer days of after office hours left to spare.

Just jotting down the people I've met, and what happened to my days!

Wednessday - first day of work. Went out lunch alone at the neighbouring food court. Went straight back home.
Thursday - Explored Prince Georges Park
Cafe, alone. Had tuition at Janice yiyi's house. Stayed over.
Friday - Ventured to Business Canteen, met chui. Stayed over at Jane yiyi's house.
Saturday - Went for choir with sam, lunch with CK gugu and family, bumped into Nigel outside his shop at Cine, movie and dinner with yuch. "Thank you for smoking", a good watch.
Sunday - Joined Sam's cell, usual youth service, lunch with cell at Margrait Drive - Hor Fun! Hung out at ikea, looking for espresso machine, dinner at Jane yiyi's house.
Monday - Arranged to meet Matthew at Sci Fac for lunch, but due to communications breakdown, couldn't contact him. But bumped into Jiabin, Shaofeng, and Lixin. Joined Jimmy and Zhihan for dinner and lan at parklane, and adjourned across the road for dao hui after.
Today - Marks the conclusion of my first week on the job. No arrangements for lunch, prob make my way to sci fac canteen again for claypot rice. Going to have dinner with the P6 kid I'm taking for tuition on Tuesdays.

    Other pending tasks:
    - doing the cf webpage in what is left of my spare time at home, and
    - arranging for archims fair, and
    - booking the pits when the time comes, for cumsa.

    Wednesday, July 05, 2006

    Content Management System Trial Site

Looking for a CMS to power the CCCF website now.

Here's a good site to sample the different CMS's available

Thinking the function of the CCCF Website, in order of importance:
    1) Infomation about who we are,
    2) Updates on our events,
    3) Photos,
    4) Download page, and a way to display our publication,
    5) A forum would be nice, but may not be well utilised.

    An Update

    Internship at IHPC!
Beginning internship tmr! Really looking forward to it! Gonna be a really enriching experience, and have lots of hopes about it.

    Home Improvements
Serene got Budgies! There are pets in the house again!

And I got a new acoustic for $125 at sweelee, to replace the guit I brought over to Cambridge.

    Some Progress on my Responsibilities
    - Begun surveying different cms's, but have yet to install and meddle with them on my com.
    - Emailed the archims plenum and committee to arrange for volunteers to man the booth at fresher's fair.
    - Begun reading up on some physics topics I'd be covering next year.
    - Cumsa's gonna to hold an event at my place! Need to sort out the booking of the function room and bbq pits...

    Pictures of CS Gugu visit
    Now on Gallery...

Internship beginning tmr!!! Cant wait :P
