Saints Reunion Dinner

Tonight was one nostalgic evening. By circumstances I did not expect or intend, I ended up attending the SAJC reunion dinner, and I how I enjoyed it! I went on Wei An's ticket cos he was not able to make it, sitting with the councillors of my year. I vaguely remember their faces, and barely knew any of them. But I've been used to mixing around with strangers recently, having to make new friends at fresher's events, so I did not feel very left out. However, I did see lots of other old, familiar faces, and it added to the sense of nostalgia.

The food was pretty decent for an outdoor event, and it was sufficient without being excessive. The weather was nice and cool. And sitting with the councillors, the company was very vibrant. But what made the night special was the tunes which were playing. The familiar sound of our excellent (that's an understatement) school band, and the finale where we did cheers and sang the our lovely school song. It reminds me of how much I loved being in St Andrews, and how very special St Andrews is. It was extremely heart warming to see Saints from different generations connecting through the cheers and singing the school song, among these saints were some of my favourite teachers... It felt like we were all kids again, finding amusement in screaming our lungs out for something as trivial as fun.

One thing I find unique to St Andrews is that our identity is so poignant. The theme 'Saints' can be so easily translated into merchandises, as a result we have a whole range of very interesting t-shirts we can wear to proclaim our identity. I bought one today for $12.

I think St Andrews has the best school song around! One that affords lots wise advice on life, to a very catchy tune, almost like a cartoon theme song.
Lives are in the making here
Hearts are in the waking here
Mighty undertaking here
Up and On! Up and On!

We are arming for the fight
Pressing on with all our might
Plumming wings for higher flight
Up and On!

Up boys
Truest fame lies in high endeavour
Play the game
Keep the flame burning brightly ever

Fair before us lies the way
Time for work and time for play
Fill the measure while we may
Up and On! Up and On!

Life and time will not delay
Time is running fast away
Life is now today, today
Up and On!

Up boys
Truest fame lies in high endeavour
Play the game
Keep the flame burning brightly ever

Foes in plenty we shall meet
Hearts couragous scorn defeat
So we press with eager feet
Up and On! Up and On!

Ever onward to the fight
Ever upward to the light
Ever true to God and Right
Up and On!

Up boys
Truest fame lies in high endeavour
Play the game
Keep the flame burning brightly ever

Oh No! The week is over...

The Conclusion of a Pedagogical Chapter

Everything in life comes in a package.
With it's share of bitter, and a doze of sweet.
Tuesday marked the end of my stint as a relief teacher at my alma matar. With teacher's day celebrations and the end of term filling up the rest of the week, and the holidays thereafter, there's no chance that I'd be returning anytime soon.

Chatted with Lawrence Koh, my Sec 3 A-math, and Scouts teacher just before I left the staff room one last time. Related to him how I've enjoyed coming back to school and relieving my sec sch days as I worked as a relief teacher; how I've enjoyed working with all my old teachers, though I've come to realise that teachers hardly get time to interact among themselves, nevertheless it was a great experience... How beautiful the new school compound is, and how I relish being greeted by the stunning view every morning as I walked into school.

Chapel of the Accension atop the hill.

A warm view of the refurbished old school building.

As with everything else in life, this experience hadn't been entirely rosy. Throughout this tour, I've exchanged my idealistic, romantic view of a teacher for a realistic, and more sobered one. I started teaching envisioning myself capturing the imagination of the kids, but I soon realised that before a teacher can do that, he first has to subject them to his control. And that's an immense challenge! I take my hat off to all my teacher's on this teacher's day blog entry. Cos I was one of those students who provided my teachers with such a challenge :p

I began this chapter as a relief PE teacher around 2 months ago. And within these two months, I've practically took every genre of class from Sec 1 Express to Sec 5 Normal, relieved a whole spectrum of subjects from PE to D&T and Homec, Science, Maths, Chinese! English, computer lessons.

School aside, I just received my first ever teacher's day card from my a-math kid :p I never thought of myself as a teacher all this while, just some guy helping a kid at the subject. Well, this card served to prove me otherwise, sealing my role as a full fledged teacher. It's kinda encouraging to know that your efforts are appreciated. But better than cards, I now understand how the greatest reward of a teacher is seeing his student do well...

The Friendship Index

I've been wondering what are the ingredients of a good friendship. Since I left Secondary School, throughout my JC and especially army days, I've come to realise that people we meet in life come and go, and good friendships is very often a result of favourable circumstance.

There are times when I meet people with the same mind and enjoy being with, but circumstances prys our paths apart, and we end up going our seperate ways. Other times, especially in army, I have been put with people whom I might not usually click very well with under normal conditions, but because we share a common experience, we become very good friends.

Friendships are also a function of Chemistry and Physics. It is quite common for people to use the term Chemistry to describe how well two people get along with each other... And physics? Well, it's the amount of effort (work done) each party puts into a friendship ;)

I have attempted to put in all these factors into an equation coined "Friendship Index". This index measures how good a friendship between two parties, Alice (denoted by a) and Bob (denoted by b), is. The larger the value the better friends they are. Ok, this equation is largely nonsense, as the values here cannot be determined quantitatively at all. It is simply my attempt at expressing how I feel each of these factors affects friendship. But i guess it can have applications in a game involving friendships...

The function F(a,b), the Friendship Index between Alice and Bob, is defined as,

where
cf is the favourable circumstance (yuo3 yuan2 factor) - the circumstances forcing Alice and Bob to interact even though they do not make an effort to.
cu is the unfavourable circumstance (mei2 yuo3 yuan2 factor)- the circumstances hindering Alice's and Bob's Efforts at an interaction, the smaller the number, the more unfavourable the circumstance.
Ea and Eb measure Alice's and Bob's Efforts at an interation respectively.
Aa and Ab measure the Affinity of Alice towards Bob and Bob towards Alice respectively - How much pleasure Alice gains from interaction with Bob, and vice versa.

An anotomy of the Friendship Index

The Interaction Opportunity Index, measures the amount of interation between Alice and Bob. Heavily dependent on circumstance, but can be affected by effort. However it's effectiveness requires that both parties play their part, and that there is no overwhelmingly unfavourable circumstances.

The Mutual Affinity Index, measures how much both parties gain from an interaction. This value increases with larger Aa and Ab, but is maximum for a constant sum Aa + Ab when Aa and Ab are equal, and zero if either party does not like the other.

Thus when you take the product of how much interaction they have and how much they gain from each interaction, you get how good a friendship is :p

Also need to call MOE up soon to sort out my pay, they underpaid 2 days worth of salary, $130.00 :s

A few non-urgent but increasingly important things on my to-do list...
  • Start packing;
  • Find out about how to go about to increase baggage allowance;
  • Figure out my newly acquired palm...

Yesterday was 28 August, in exactly one month's time from yesterday, 31 days, the Wednessday after 4 weekends, I'd be leaving for good, and embarking on this new journey; living, controling, and managing my life for myself; truely gaining my independence.

I wanna start off this journey right... A few areas of my life, I wish to properly manage from the very beginning.
  1. Spiritual
  2. Social
  3. Financial
  4. My lifestyle
Not really ready to elaborate on any of these yet, but these are some of the aspects I'd wish to begin on a right foot...

Air Tix

Just registered for the KrisFlyer Card on the SingaporeAir Website so that I can start earning mileage from the very first trip :p

Now gotta find out how to increase the baggage allowance to 40kg, need to look for an address to write to...

Unresolved Matters Revisited.

The past week saw the resolution of a number of admin matters, most significant of which was the opening of a HSBC Bank Account. I've also made my ISIC card, gotten the Internationally enabled POSB card, my father has submitted the application for a few credit cards, and bought an insurance policy for me. Looking back at the post Unresolved Matters, I've pretty much settled everything less the air tickets!

I guess it's also about time I started packing for the transition. Not sure where to begin though...

I am so Blessed!

Isn't it a beauty?

My uncle just popped by from Shanghai, and gave me tons of stuff for my uni! Including that sleek Sony Clie!!!

I've been looking for an Palm or PDA to organise my life, and a camera to capture images of my university journey, and I got both in the form of the SONY CLIE PEG-NX70V/U!

Now I'm looking for applications that run on it...

I also inherited 3 thick jackets, and a woolen scarf from him. And they fit perfectly! Thank God for such uncles!

When God blesses, it is abundent indeed!

A Helpful Guide

The layout of this page does not do the content justice. Lots of useful infomation which I have been looking for: it appears to be everything! From immigration, to clothes to bring, to banking, medical care, insurance, phone subscriptions, etc.

Self Diagnosis

I believe I'm autistic, albeit mildly. While I am good at math, i found that it has come at the price of my social ability. And it is not something I am proud of or want to be because famous scientists have shown signs of autism, rather I find this social defenciecy very restrictive, how I wish this talent didn't come with such a malicious curse. And I'm quite concerned about it, especially since I'm about to embark a phase of life on a fresh social sheet, i.e. I'm beginning this new phase of life, without knowing anybody, giving me the opportunity to build relationships afresh. I'm hoping that I don't screw it up this time...

One problem I find myself facing is that I do not have the natural ability to react spontaneously to situations. This results in my actions conveying messages contrary to what I feel at crucial moments when I'm put in a situation, thus getting myself into things I am not prepared for.

I find that I am deficient at handling uncertainty, it manifests when I'm playing sports, through my inability to catch balls well; when I'm playing computer games, I take ages to process information and react to the situation, I'd need to prepare my actions prior to an encounter with an opponent, and whenever I face a difficulty, I'll react with one of my preconceived plans, that's why the comments that my playing resembles that of a AI computer player. I also find myself deficient in expressing my thoughts spontaneously, thus I find that I easily allow people to impose their will over mine. I lack the ability which a dog uses when it leaps into the air to catch a Frisbee - the ability to respond intuitively, yet incredibly accurately.

On the flip side, when I'm among people who are very nice, I begin to worry that I might be doing things that are not pleasant, but the other party is being too nice to express it. To this end, I realize that the friends I am most comfortable with are those whom I've known for a long time, and who have gotten involved in a quarrel with, and gotten over it. I have a cousin whom I had lots of animosity with when we were younger, but now we are best of friends. The reason I feel at ease is because I know that when he is unhappy with something, he will voice it out, and I am confident that if nothing is said, all is well... Unfortunately, because I am not able to deliver such frank responses when I am in an environment where people are artificially nice, as I would be 'programmed' to respond pleasantly, it breeds an environment where people are too nice, and causing me to worry (perhaps unduly) about whether my actions are acceptable.

I am especially worried about as I'll soon find myself in the extremely pleasent, cultured environment of the University.

On another note, I've only recently begun to be aware of the social dynamics that occur around me, I'm not sure if this late insight was can be attributed to my upbringing, or because of my autistic predisposition. Perhaps it's both. Growing up, I never really considered the social aspect of things, I've always thought that things were definitely right or wrong, I took opinions lightly as long as the 'right' thing is done. It was until I entered NS that I discovered opinions do matter, especially true if the opinion was that of your superior's, because he defines right and wrong.

I've since extended this insight to encompass everyone. I realized that economics is all about one person's effort translating into meeting another person's desires, and in turn being rewarded for it. So if the person on the receiving end does not think that something is good, he does not buy the product, and thus affects the definition of whether the product is popular or not. Of course, there may be some instance of a quantifiable measurement, like the results of a tuition kid, or the effectiveness of a drug, but many other attributes like enjoyment is hard to measure precisely.

After gaining the insight that opinions do matter, I realized that every exchange should strive to satisfy both parties, and it should not be imbalances to the point where one party feels taken advantaged of, or the other party feels bad that he is receiving too much. I've learnt this principle after volunteering in some organizations and giving tuition. Especially in the particular situation where I volunteered to help my cousin and was paid by my uncle, it seems that they are able to make this delicate balance very well.

In the past, I saw such exchanges in terms of what I am giving vs what I'm getting. In situations where I intend to get, the smaller the ratio, the better; many times leaving the other party at the unfair end of the deal. I recall bargaining with a person selling peanuts in China, misguidedly encouraged by my parents, I feel very bad now as what I gained from the bargain was literally peanuts to me, but a significant sum to the poor seller... And in situations I intended to give, I would try my best not to receive anything out of it, and I've found such situations draining and unsustainable. I've grown wiser.

I've also found that I learnt many such social principles from teaching in the classroom. In such an environment, the raw social interactions are exposed, it is not masked by any niceties as there is no time for the teacher to do that, and on the student's part, such a concept is quite foreign to them. The teacher often conveys exactly the behavior he expects, and the children responds accordingly if they accept it or not. This provides an excellent social litmus paper to test the action I make. And each time I enter a classroom, I have another chance at the experiment, thus refining my social skills.

Ok, I'll end here abruptly, blogging about this because I felt that I mishandled some interactions recently, and worried that I'll make the same mistake in future. And a major interaction session with my future uni mates would be happening tomorrow at the fresher's tea, hopefully I'll handle it well.

Insight into a Musical Octave

I've been browsing through the online magazine called

Came across it as a link on Prof Artur Ekert's Physics Symposium Profile.

It appears to be Cambridge publication, with many articles being contributed by authors from Cambridge.

Came across an article on the Mathematics of Music which answers many of my musical inquiries.

One exciting insight I gained was the construction of the musical notes in terms of the frequency. I've observed, from messing around with the guitar recently, that the frequency between any note an octave apart is related to each other by a factor of 2, for example the frequency of "Middle C" as i've learnt in the article is 262 Hz, and the frequency of "High C" is 2 times that of "Middle C", 524 Hz. As can be deduced from the fact that length of the guitar string is halved between octaves.

I've also noticed that the tone produced by a string between successive frets sound the same relative to each other. And I've been wondering exactly how this is related with the frequency.

Well, this question was answered in the article. As an octave is divided into 12 equal "tone"s or "semi-tone"s (I'm not sure what is the correct term for it, but there are 12 frets dividing an octave), the way to make each tone sound the same relative to the previous within these 12 frets is to increase the frequency of one to the other by the same factor, which works out to be the Twelveth Root of Two. When this happens, each tone would sound the same relative to the preceeding tone, and after 12 notes, the frequency would have increased by two times!

Superposition of States...

A Nobel Encounter

Attended the last day of the Physics Symposium yesterday, listened to a the lecture given by a Nobel Laureate, Robert Laughlin. Was profoundly affected by what the said about physicist's view of the world being too tainted by their unverifiable believes, such as the belief that the world has to follow nice and cushy simple rules. He cautioned that this might not be the case, and that the laws of physics might well arise as a consequence of the collective behavior of stuff...

As an aspiring physicist, who has chosen to do physics because of the plausibiilty that we are on the verge of the holy grail of knowledge, that is the fundamental laws of the universe, hearing this proposition for the first time was alarming, as it has very disturbing implications.

One of which is that the universe is complex even at the deeper levels (in such a case, there would be no such thing as the deepest, or most fundamental principle). Prof Laughin educated us that smashing particles in the very controlled environment of the particle accelerator yielded as diverse a result as smashing rocks together, thus implying that we may not be any nearer to the fundamental laws of nature.

So I approached Prof Laughin and expressed this concern to him. Laughin responded by relating a story about how he had a discussion with a Marxist friend who believed in the simple, elegant laws of Marxism, although it does not agree with the reality. The moral of his story is that one should not be blinded by personal believes, to the extent that one misses hard experimental facts. And to quote him verbatim,

"True Physics is Experimental.
If you want to be a Real Physicist,
You'd have to be an Experimentalist!"

Well, I guess I'll bear these words of wisdom in mind when I approach physics in future. Though I might still hold on to the hope that the world is fundamentally elegant as there is no compelling proof that it isn't, and this hope is a very strong motivation to understand nature.

Alright, enough talk about a Laureate,

lau·re·ate (lôr'ē-ĭt, lŏr'-)
adj.
  1. Worthy of the greatest honor or distinction: “The nation's pediatrician laureate is preparing to lay down his black bag” (James Traub).
  2. Crowned or decked with laurel as a mark of honor.
  3. Archaic. Made of laurel sprigs, as a wreath or crown.
n.
  1. One honored or awarded a prize for great achievements especially in the arts or sciences: a Nobel laureate.
  2. A poet laureate.

[Middle English, from Latin laureātus, adorned with laurel, from laurea, crown of laurel, from feminine of laureus, of laurel, from laurus, laurel.]
lau're·ate·ship' n.

I also attended a lecture on Quantum Infomatics given by Prof Artur Ekert (He's from Cambridge!) . It was a very stimulating lecture, the most engaging in this series I attended. At the very least, I gained an idea about how all these quantum mechinical experiments are performed technically. Though there are many parts I don't quite understand...

From what I gather, a useful quantum phenomen is Entanglement. Entanglement provides a way to generate random numbers, which can be recieved by only 2 parties. And thus can act as a secret key by which one can encrypt infomation.

Exactly how Entanglement is performed still eludes me. I know that entangled particles are created by a novel process that neccessarily produces identicle particles(how?!). For most discussions, the particle in question was a photon. And some property of the particle is random, this property must be able to represent a value. For the case of the photon, it is the polarity(why?!). When the entangled photons are created, it's polarity is random and not known, the value it represents exists as a superposition of all the possible values, until one photon is measured, then because of the quantum phenomenom, the superposition of states of the other particle also collapses. I'm not exactly sure how this would prevent potential evesdroppers though, I asked the Prof, and he said that the answer would lie in some kind of protocol could exploit this phenomenom...

As for the technical aspects, I was vaguely told that an entangled pair of photons can be created by sending a pulse of light into a crystal, which would excite an electron that would subsequently fall 2 energy levels and in the process release a pair of entangled photons. How it can be made to fall 2 energy levels and create entangled photons, still baffles me. I also learnt that the photons are typically transmitted through optical fibres, and that entangled photons have been routinely transmitted up to a distance of 30 km.

Still on the topic of quantum physics, Prof Laughin mentioned a few times about asking the right question...

Then it occured to me regarding Schrodinger's Cat:
Instead of simply asking
"whether the cat is dead or alive",

you extended the question to
"if the cat is dead, when did it die?"

Would one be able to determine such a property as an event in the quantum context?

I reckon it would be as difficult to answer as the question
"if it is alive, when will it die?"

Qubits!

Went for a Physics Symposium at NTU today.

Sat through 3 lectures on
  • The Photoelectric Effect,
  • Quantum Spintronics, and Quantum Computing, and
  • Superconductivity

I really enjoyed the lecture on Quantum Computing given by a certain professor called Sankar Das Sarma. Now I'm interested to learn more about Quantum Computing, Qubits, and related stuff...

Found a good website on answers.com when searching for qubits: Qubit.org. Seems to have a lot of infomation on the topic.

I liked what Prof Sankar said about trying to predict the next revolution in Physics. Many times, people try extrapolating the current trends to attempt to predict what would happen 50 years or 100 years down the road, but as Prof Sankar puts it, they fail to realise that "Technology does not progress through extrapolation, it advances in Leaps!"

One living in the 18 century would be wrong to say that "since we have gone from travelling at 15 km/h on foot to 50 km/h on horse carriages in 1000 years, means that we would take another 1000 years to travel at 100 km/h".

I won't be able to make it for tomorrow's session cos of commitments in SAS. But I'm hoping to attend the lectures on Friday about Ciphers and Computers, as well as the talk by the Nobel Laureate... Perhaps get my ISIC Card done also...

Closure.

Went back to SAJC yesterday during their National Day Celebrations. Met Mr Ong, and for the first time, I wasn't there to bug him for a Reference Letter or Teacher's Recommendation :P Instead, I went with a little souvenir from Cam thanking him for helping me through the applications process, and writting the recommendation that would granted me 7500 pounds a year! It felt like I was closing a big successful project, that is my admission to Cam, and there was a celebratory mood, thanks in part to the National Day events.

Also spoke with my GP teacher, Mr Lim. He related his university experience, and urged me to make the most of my uni life, cautioning me not to be a recluse, as i have the tendency to... After speaking with him, I rediscovered why I've always enjoyed talking with him - He has this ability to analyse a situation and find the precise words to accurately articulate his analysis.

Well, I had a good chat with him, and recounted how just a few months back I wasn't even sure whether I would find myself in Cam after all the trouble, and now it's confirmed, and I'm 50 days away from living that life.

Also related my impression of Cam. How, before I visited the place, I thought it was this disneyland like utopia where university students played. With impeccably mowed lawns, beautifully kept historical buildings, inhibitted by friendly and intelligent people. How we'll be running our own little lives, living in little appartments, with cooking facilities so that we could play masak-masak for real if we fancied; and we'll get around this beautiful little town on bicycles in the perpetually air-conditioned environment. Well, after visiting the town, i realised that it wasnt that perfect image i had, but it still is heaven compared with the other 'Camp' I've been through.

So much for my utopic image of Cam. However i belief that the experience in Cam would be invaluable. I feel that Cam would be a very good/sheltered place to learn to be independent, learn to take care and be responsible for every aspect of life. From tidying up the room, to doing the daily admin, like banking and what not... to laundry, and perhaps cooking, and on top of that going to work (school actually), and making friends, serving in church, having fun... It's like having a practical course on living independently.

Ok, after visiting SAJC, I decided to go down to orchard road to make my ISIC Card. I looked through the brochure, and found only one address - "33A Cuppage Terrace". I ran through Mr Lim's street directory and found that it was near Centerpoint, so i took the MRT to Somerset. To cut a long story short, I reached Centerpoint, and found a lot of buildings named "Cuppage", and one short row of shop houses called "Cuppage Terrace" I could see the entire building at one glance, but the only shops i saw were eateries, restaurants. No sign of any travel agency. Called the number on the brochure, call answered by a machine, got clues like 7th floor, Orchard Towers, basically got clues pointing in every direction and could not make out anything... A failed trip.

Met up with scouts friends to play games a while later. One game we played, Munchkin was particularly funny. Spent the afternoon playing. Then adjourned to eat at Billy Bombers. The meals were quite expensive, but having worked so hard the past week, I decided to treat myself.

Then took a slow walk down to the Fullerton building to watch the fireworks festival. We got a good place, under the image of the Merlion, was a bit wet though, as the wind was blowing the water gushing out of the merlion into us... Waited a while for the fireworks which went off at midnight, but when it happened, it was quite specticular... Actually the fireworks itself cannot be compared with that of the NDP, but the exciting part was watching it with friends... it's been a while since I went out with friends specially to watch a fireworks display.

Returned home by MRT, but missed the last bus home, dont know by how long thou... so took a cab back from the station. It costed me $5.40! But well, figured i should enjoy myself now when the prices are still affordable. The total amount of money i spent for the outing was approx $40. About a day's savings.

Unresolved Matters

After yesterday's shopping spree, I've checked off a few major items on my uni prep list. I shall now consolidate what is left.
  • Air Ticket
  • Banking
  • Insurance

Air Ticket
The most important item on the list now, but there's nothing much I can do about it at the moment. I've found a travelling companion, and his mother is sorta settling the details. We've almost made up our mind to travel on Emirates, as it costs $1200 as compared with the $1800 SQ is charging. If all goes accordingly, we'll be departing on 27 Sept in the wee hours of the morining.
It'll be an exciting trip as we'll be transiting in Dubai, and I've never been to the middle east before. But I'm concerned that transitting in another country might add complication to the immigration health requirements. That's one thing I'll need to find out...
And yes... I'll need to book the National Express coach to Cam online.

Banking
There are a few thing's I'd need to do:
The first and simplest is to get an internationally enabled Nets Card. I'll simply pop by a POSB office one day when it's convinient.
The other would be to get a credit card from the bank my father is using. Think he'll settle it for me...
The third would be to find out how I can create a HSBC account in Singapore. Will need to call them soon...

Insurance
I've personally never understood insurance policies before. All the plans look greek to me. But thankfully I've got a friend who is helping me find out about these plans, and my parents have a few friends in the business. So would be getting a few samples of insurance policies, and lots of keen advice. The challenge would be chosing the right policy and committing the right amount of money...

Wow, in 7 weeks I'd be on my way to begin a new, exciting, unprecedented phase of my life. Wait a min... Isn't every phase of life as unprecendented? Ok, a quick search of answers.com yields a few synonyms of exciting: exhilarating, thrilling. I'm still coming to terms with it.

A look back on the applications process:

But thanks to some sale Robinsons is giving, we had a 20% discount. That translates into around $120 worth of savings!

It suddenly occured to me a few days ago, that I'll be leaving home for an extended period of time in less than 50 days! I've been having a lingering feeling that there are so many things to do before I leave, and the weeks just seem to fly pass...

Friday, August 05, 2005

This week came and went in the blink of an eye!

Wow, this week just flew past me! I've been so caught up with teaching that before i knew it, it's friday already! I've been doing relief from Monday to Thursday. I had told myself after last week's mishap that I would not turn down any relief request, and activate me they did! Four days in a row! And when you work, the time just flies pass. Not that i'm complaining, but I'm beginning to wonder if I should cut back on teaching, as the corresponding returns in terms of satisfection is beginning to diminish with the excessive amount of time spent teaching...

Ok, another account of how the week went, begining with saturday...
Friday night - Sat morn: Met up with scouts friends at Varun's house, overnight session of Puerto Richo, a game involving growing crops and sending them back to the homeland. It has lots of economic elements to it, and it's a game without any dice!
Varun's dog died! So sad...

Sunday: Church, lunch, family gathering...

Monday: Relief.

Tuesday: Relief, Tuition.

Wednessday: Relief, Collected passport with visa!!! Tuition.

Thursday: Relief, Helped out with Math Society.

Today: Well deserved break (i.e.Slacking), blogging, hopefully will discipline myself to put in energy to reduce the increasing state of entropy in my room.

So there goes my week!

On monday, I finally got to speak to my favouritest physics teacher, who is a HOD now. I realised that teachers hardly get time to interact with each other, as they are all so busy with the students. I hope he's proud on me going to study at cam. He told me that it was also his dream to study there, but his situation didn't permit. I'm more appreciative of how fortunate i am to be able to fulfil this dream.

Today's break from relief was a welcome relieve. And with NDP happening next week, I'll probrably not be teaching for a few days. But I won't be slacking at home! Just listing down what's installed:

Monday: Visit SAJC, for NDP celebration, hopefully get to catch up with Mr Ong, and thank him for helping me through the application process. Then proceed to NUS to meet jc friends for lunch, perhaps will apply for ISIC card at the travel agent. Gotta prepare the documents beforehand...

Tuesday: Nothing planned as yet... It's NDP!

Wednessday: Lectures are beginning at NUS, wanna crash, but there's also a physics seminar at NTU which I've signed up for... I'll see how it goes on that day.

Thursday: I've committed to doing relief, so it's back to school!

Friday: Lectures/Seminar/Relief? It still exists in a quantum state, which will soon be observed!

Phew! that's 2 full weeks in one post!

Oxymoron

Was reading answers.com for the meaning and origin of the word Oxymoron.

Learnt that "Oxymoron is a Greek term derived from oxy ('sharp) and moros ('dull')."

Then I saw an amusing poem ladened with oxymorons in the article. I recalled reading a similar poem in secondary school, perhaps in literature:
"One long day in the middle of the night,
Two dead men came out to fight.
Back to back they faced each other,
Drew their swords and shot each other"

But the poem recalled went slightly differently:
"One fine day in the middle of the night,
Two dead men came out to fight.
Back to back they faced each other,
Drew their swords and shot each other.
If you don't belief that what I said is true,
Ask the blind man, he saw it too!"

It's quite funny the first time I read it, but upon reading it a second time, found it quite lame...

Hm... lame? another word i'm going to look up...
Ok, here it is:

lame1(lām)
adj., lam·er, lam·est.
  1. Disabled so that movement, especially walking, is difficult or impossible: Lame from the accident, he walked with a cane. A lame wing kept the bird from flying.
  2. Marked by pain or rigidness: a lame back.
  3. Weak and ineffectual; unsatisfactory: a lame attempt to apologize; lame excuses for not arriving on time.

Ok, I'm using it for the 3rd definition: Weak and ineffectual; unsatisfectory :p

Also learnt from the article that we often use the term 'oxymoron' on situations which are more accurately described as 'contraditory".
It says that "the original, literary meaning of 'oxymoron'" implies "an artful use of a contradiction for effect."

A lousy end to an otherwise fulfilling week

This week started pleasantly, having celebrated my birthday with some of the people I enjoyed being with, and having my excitement of uni life fueled by meeting the other people going to study in cam.

I also thought I had quite good returns on my time throughout the week. I did relief teaching on Monday and Tuesday, settled my medical stuff in the afternoon, had tuition in the evening, had a good driving session on Wednesday morning, and helped the maths society in the afternoon, relief on Thursday followed by a session of helping my teacher organize a math competition in the afternoon. I had a very packed week indeed.

However, I screwed today up, argh! Turned up one hour late for a one hour driving lesson, because I mixed up the time. It was a circuit lesson somemore! Essencially a wasted trip and a wasted day! My driving instructor was kind enough to make me pay $17.50 for the cost of the circuit, but still, argh... I wasted his time, and mine, and I turned down a relief teaching opportunity for a driving lesson that didn't happen, argh!

The total cost of this screw-up:
$17.50(circuit)
+$4.00(transport)
+$65.00(relief teaching pay)
= $86.50!!!

Now I'm determined to organize my life. Take it as a lesson, so that I wont make the same mistake in future when the stakes are higher, i.e. in pounds.

Inevitably I felt very heart-ache and quite sad after this incident. Then I recalled the time when I was in NS, dreaming to do everything I'm doing now, and I realized I'm in a much better situation than I was before, and I would be very happy to be in my shoes today than to live like I did in NS. So I did not feel so bad.

Then I wondered: what determines one's mood? Why should my mood be affected by one unfortunate isolated incident? Maybe I should learn to base my mood on something more permanent yet no less real... God's unchanging love and his infallible plan.

But still, after the costly mistake, I felt like I've been spending a lot recently... On Driving, Uni Application Fees, Immigration, Medical fees, birthday celebration, etc. I shall make a list of how much I've spent thus far...

Driving:
Practical lessons: $23*25hrs = $530
Tests + Registration: $20(Reg fee for AMKDC) + $6(Basic) +$6(Advance) + $6(Reg fee for SSDC) + $20(TP) = $72
Estimated extra cost: $50*8lessons = $400.
Hopefully I'll get my license with around 1k.

Immigration:
Costed me $300 in application fees alone!!!

Medical:
Consultation: $59.35
X-ray: $29.40
Meningitist Jab: $36.60

Just listing my expenditures down to see where all the money is going...

Another abruptly ended, long incoherent post...

Hamachi

Just came across the above named application today, introduced by Hanes.

It is an application that allows you to connect directly to your friend's network, so that your PC behaves like one of the computers on their lan!!! How cool is that?!

Here's the link to download hamachi.

With all these new application, the lan shops may soon be meeting their demise.

Happy Lanning!

Rekindled Interest in Programming

I often feel that my progress in certain areas follow cycles of boom and bust, just like the economy, and pretty much everything in life.

Well, not too long ago, I my life saw a "Computer Revolution", with my acquisition of programs like a Visual Basic compiler, Apache, and PHP. But after I've learnt much of what is known, my interest for it died down. Ever so often, my interest is rekindled by a sudden source of infomation, and a means to further my understanding in the area.

Recently, I found a website, Warindustries which I've visited before, but did not gain much from it, just because I was not prepared back then, and I did not have the relevent background knowledge to understand what was written. Now, haveing experience in setting up servers, and a vague understanding of how networks function, I am able to comprehend some of the notes they host on the website.

I learnt from an article that i can see all the connections a computer has established by typing "netstat" in the dos command prompt. I think this revelation would initiate another explosion in my understanding of the internet, and how networks work...

Bobbins Comics.

Found a link The New Adventures of Bobbin! on shian's blog.

It's apparently a locally produced comic, definitely lots of local issues reflected. I like this particular strip:

If anything it reminds me of the complaints of some of my friend's who give tuition.

turning twenty-one.

The past weekend was an eventful one, not least because I turned 21... As always, though this is an event I've wanted to blog about, I can't seem to find the words to describe it, and I don't know where to begin relating the story. Nevertheless, I shall try, and hope it turns out well...

Jul 23 2005 was anticipated for more than my 21st birthday. It was the date of the pre-departure briefing organised by the british council. An event which gathered all those travelling to the UK to study, and the organizations related with studying in the UK, student organisations like CUMSA. I've been looking forward to meet those singaporeans studying in, and going to Cam.

At the briefing, I met the some of the present students at Cam, as well as those students matriculating with me. I also found someone travelling there on 28 Sep. A potential travelling companion. Since the briefing, his mother and my mother have become good friends, they went to book the air tickets for us yesterday.

Meeting the people at the briefing invoked many feelings. While it was comforting to know people in the same boat, people who are faced with the the same problems as me, visa, medical, air tickets, etc; meeting them also invoked a strange feeling - the thought that these strangers i see now, would in the next 3 years, become the familiar faces I see around in my life. A life which I would be for running myself, without the security and presence of my family, or for that matter anyone I presently know. A life where my friends would become infinitely more important than the friends I've had in any previous phase of my life.

So much for the pre-departure briefing. I have many other thoughts and feelings, but I find it difficult to articulate them.

After the briefing, we went shopping around suntec city. We looked at lugguage bags, suits, and pants. My parents got me two Ashworth pants costing $42 each, fitted very nicely. Ok, here are the sizes for future references...
Pants - waist size: 32"/80cm.
Suit, i don't know what the size refers to but it is 50.

Then we adjourned to Top of the M, for dinner with Pastor John Tan, to celebrate my birthday. It was a great dinner, with the NDP rehersal happening at the padang, we had a great view of the aeroplanes and fireworks. There was also a group of musicians going round the tables and you could request for any song you fancied. They were really good, and I enjoyed the music.

And today I had a meal at Seoul Gardens with my good friends, had a wonderful time of reminiscing our secondary school days with my sec school mates. Glad that those who made it came, their company was the best present I could ask for. Yu Chou and Jian Qing, drivers from 46 SAR came too, my regret was that I wasn't able to catch up much with them as the conversation was dominated by topics from my secondary school. They left early and went for a movie. I hope that they at least enjoyed the meal.

Alright, I'll leave the un-publish-worthy account of my birthday at that. Wish to somehow capture this occasion, so here it is...

Beware of Messanger Plus...

It installs malware on the computer, puts this annoying search2web toolbar on your IE, and places lots of shortcuts to the tune of "my antivirus update", "tune up my pc", find a date, and a casino icon on your desktop.

Got so irritated i decided to google these links, and followed the directions in a few forums i read. I ran Hijackthis and deleted a few suspicious programs, I also cant remember which programs i deleted might be the contribute to solving the problem, but the icons and search bar still did not go away. In the end, I read somewhere that messanger plus was the root problem, so i uninstalled it.

After that, I realised the the icons and the toolbar were gone. So the moral of the story is: Messanger Plus is evil. Unless you dont mind living with annoying popups and toolbars, dont download it. For those already affected, try googleing for the solution, when all else fails, you could try uninstalling Messanger Plus.

That's not the end of my malware woes though, still have the "MyWebSearch" program listed in the programs list, though it seems dormant. And I cant remove it! The good thing about Messanegr Plus is that it graciously allows you to uninstall it, unlike some other viruses. Hope to find out how to totally get rid of such viruses.

The Things I Blog About

I realised that there are some topics I am able to write about more spontaneously than others. There were many times I thought "this is a significant time of my life and I'd like to blog about it so that I'll be able to look back on it someday", but when I'm infront of the blogger dashboard, I just cant seem to find the right words to describe the occassion, or I simply dont know where to begin or what exactly to write about.

But there are other things that I just blog about spontaneously, these are usually pressing issues that are on my mind. I find that jotting these things down can help to relief the stress and the feeling of uneasiness that you may forget something important.

I think I can explain it in this manner: I find it easier to state facts, and list an analysis of a situation, than to describe a feeling. But I want to remember both as much.

And one thing I want to remember about the past two weeks is how much I enjoyed myself. I went out with my JC friends, went for a night cycling expedition and went out playing lan with them; and with my church friends, playing lan, doing community service, and i enjoyed the time of sharing during the last cell. I also had the opportunity last week to teach, albeit PE lessons, at my old school. Really enjoyed reliveing my secondary school life, and meeting all my old teachers, and working with them.

For the first time in years, I found myself indulging in the most popular game, and enjoying it with a group of good friends. The game helped us increase the number of common experience share, thus making us better friends.

I find that good friends come about when you share common experiences, or common interests, when you are eager to relate with each other. Sometimes friendships turn stale, like when there is nothing new, and when there's nothing much to get excited about. Sometimes when I meet up with old friends, i find that your experience have taken us so far apart that once you've gotten past the catching up part, you have nothing much left to talk about.

On the other hand, i find the my best friends were those people whom I could talk to about things that were deep in heart and mind. Such a situation is often brought about by circumstances. For example, it it is often easier for someone to understand how you feel when you have gone through the same situation together. It also takes time to be able to converse about a topic, and this again is the product of circumstances.

When I entered army, I felt increasingly void of good friends, throughout the two years in there, there only were 2-3 people whom i enjoyed being with. It was just enough to keep me from going insane from pent up troubles, definitely a far cry from my school life.

But during the last two weeks, I was blessed to have enjoyed an abundance of activities with many friends.

Just want to remember the past week, and an analysis of the ingredients to a good friend. I think this entry is very incoherent. It's one attempt at blogging my feelings, something I cant do properly, but feel is neccessary.

Me? Relief PE?!?!

I just recieved a call from SAS asking me if I'd be available for the next 2 days. So far, I did not have anything planned this week, so I told them that I was free, anticipating a post as a maths or science relief teacher. But I was told that I was going to do relief for PE! At first I was shocked, then dissapointed, cos I want to try my hand at proper teaching, not babysit hyperactive teens running around. And I was never ever enthusiastic about PE or anything to do with physical fitness. But I accepted it nevertheless, for a multitude of reasons:
1)I had nothing better to do at home, except surf the increasingly boring net, or play DotA (Yes, DotA!),
2) hopefully it would increase the chances of me doing proper relief teaching,
3) I'd be making better use of my time,
4) It's good money,
5) I like being back in school.

Since I returned from my trip of the UK, I've been trying to get tune my sleep cycles back to this time zone, but due to the absence of a need to wake up early, coupled with a vibrant nocturnal online community, my efforts have largely been futile. I hope that this new appointment would help jolt me back to a healthy routine.

Other things I need to do also are:
1) Getting the visa.
I'd need to ask the college for a letter of unconditional offer to proceed with the application. Also need to prepare the relevent documents. Once it's done, I'd need to pay a visit to the visa application office along Robinson Road.

2) Getting a medical check up for uni.
Need to fill up a form and get a chest x-ray.

3) Prepare for my birthday celebration.
Decide on the place to eat, inform all those i want to invite.

Anyway, I just got WC3 and FT last Saturday, and I've been playing every single night since. I was convicted the minute I bought it because,
1: it was pirated,
2: it has satanic, mythical characters.

But I think I'll continue to play it, as
1, it's been a long time since I last enjoyed playing a popular game,
2, it'll help me to identify with the youth, and
3, I don't have much at stake now (no exams), and
4, there's no chance I'd be addicted to it, as I wont have access to the game over in England, and
5, it's so cheap! Virtually free after the $10 purchase.
6, it puts my broadband subscription to good use.

The last time I was addicted to a popular game was back in 1997, to the original Red Alert. I followed the game very closely, and i knew all the statistics, all the prices, I somehow had an innate understanding of the game. When i played it, I had total awareness of the situation, and I had a plan to counter every tactic. But the it's popularity waned as other games became more popular, and i never really kept up with it cos i was unwilling to spend money on entertainment, and i felt that it was also a waste to spend effort in pursuing such transient things. And there were moments when I regretted not having enjoyed these pleasures, that's why I am allowing myself to indulge in it this time round.

Passport Photos for less than $0.05 per piece

Just developed my own DIY passport photos, costed me $0.30 for 8 pictures! What I did was arrange 8 passport sized portraits onto a 4R photo, which costs $0.30, develop it and cut it up. The picture quality was good, comparable with a normal passport photo, even though it was in gif format. There were a few problems with the formating though... It had to do with transfering the photo to the shop. First I tried to use a floppy disk, but they couldn't read it, then I tried burning it to CD, still couldn't read. Then they attributed the problem to the file type, i had saved it as a gif file, and they told me that they can only print jpg format. So I went back to change it. But still couldn't solve the problem. In the end, the shop managed to somehow extract the picture from the gif file. Next time I'd try the photo booths.

Another problem is that the pictures are not cut exactly to the size seen on the computer. It is cut around 2mm into the edges. So when aligning the pictures next time, remember to make allowance for it.

Ok, here are some useful dimension:
4R photo: 6" x 4"
Passport photo: 3.5cm x 4.5 cm
*Remember to leave a margin of 2mm!!

Some webpages:
singablodypore: Some things you dont read in the local news. Politics aside, this blog has many peripherals, which I might like to incorperate in my own site, like the Technorati search, java clocks, and BBC News RSS feed.
The Super Hacker: ROTFLMAO (stands for Rolling On The Floor Laughing My *Arteries Out), about this hacker wannabe who ends up unknowingly hacking himself. A cyberage play unfolding on IRC.
* Substitute with another anatomical object starting with 'A'

I realise that my blogging is taking on a certain style. I constantly blog about a few topics.
1) Websites
2) Books/Games wish list
3) To-do lists
4) Reflection on Achievements
5) Personal Updates
6) Experiences

If I had the time, I'd like to design icons to preceed these topics. Like a to-do list would begin with a notepad and pen icon, achievements could begin with a trophy icon.

Back Home.

Came back from the tour on Sunday, haven't really had the mood or inspiration to blog since I returned. I don't exactly have the mood to blog now, it's just that i'm not able to fall asleep at 3 am in the morning, so might as well catch up on weeks of blogging...

We were so happening yesterday
Yesterday was one of the most fun filled, happening days in a while. And must credit Sam for organising it. He managed to jio 11 people out for lan at 10 am in the morning!! He's got the event blogged so I need not say more. *Smirks* I'm such a slacker :p

Acheivements:
As always, looking back and doing an AAR of what I've achieved...
I've changed the skin of the blog. I kinda like the professional yet simple design, and the light blue color. Actually changed it cos I wanted to get rid of the blog frame with the scrollbar. Also added a counter and site tracker, and I never realised that there were people visiting this blog. And according to the site tracker, most of them were directed from a link in Joey's Blog. Since that revelation, I'm a bit more self-conscious about the things I write, now that i know that it might actually be read.

I've also set up a photo album on negimaki.com. Posted the pics from the india exercise, and some pictures taken on the day I ord'ed.

Ah... don't really feel like blogging today, so can't create a substancial entry. Nevertheless, this entry serves to commemorate the fun we had yesterday.

Some programs I've acquired

Leaving tommorrow, but first...

Just downloaded a php editor, phpwscite. Beginning to love it for all the functionalities. It provides help instantly for any php, mysql, and apache function when you hit F1 while the cursor is on the code. There is also color coding and auto-complete, which can come in very useful when debugging, it helps to highlight all the coding mistakes. Hoping that this new tool would help me progress in my pursuit of php.

Also downloaded a ftp client, SmartFTP. I haven't explored it yet, but hoping to use it to connect to negimaki.com, so that I'd be able to upload templates for my blog and photo album. Eventually I hope to set up an FTP server on my computer, so that I'd have some control over it even when I'm in England.

The Tuesday before setting off for UK

It's been a while since I last updated. There're a lot of things happenning, and I think I'll just jot them down as it comes to mind.

I've updated my webpage links, added a google search bar. My next improvement would be adding rss feeds from sources like bbc. Still don't know how to do it, gotta analyse the code of the rss feed in friendster.

Things I need to get before setting off for study in October:
- The file/plastic folder from SAS. I really like the kind of plastic folders they sell in SAS, it has a wire for you to put papers with punched hole's, and the cover doubles as a pocket which can hold A4 paper, and you can place a table of contents, design a cover, or chuck slips of notes into. I've been searching for it for a while but cant seem to find it anywhere else.

- Foolscape paper from NUS Co-op. 3 foolscape pads for $3, beat that!

- Student Card, entitles you to lots of discounts. Gotta visit their website some day. ISIC

- Lots of passport photo's. I'm editing portrait of myself with my newly acquired photoshop 7.0. Intend to format it (perhaps 4 pictures on a photo) such that I can print it from any photo outlet as a normal photograph, and cut it up into passport photo's. I'll need a lot of it when I'm in Uni, and they dont come cheap if bought the normal way: at least $1 per piece!

My past week...
Went for 2 friend's birthday parties. Enjoyed meeting up with old friends.
Got my Advanced Theory and IELTS Result, passed both (Praise God!). Developed the photo's of my India trip - will have to setup a photo hosting account to host the pictures; I have in mind to create a photo album script for my webserver, so that I can host the photo's presentably on my site, but I seem to have a million other things in mind also... Back to my past week. Got photoshop. Visited SAS for a lesson taught by a 'Doctor' who turned out to be my ex-Fmath teacher in SAJC. Had a further investigation on the blood in the urine found during my ord ffi. sigh, still there, spending lots of $$ on the bills, think i'm getting quite agitated over it, feels like sigh, NS is coming back to haunt me. I hope there's no irreversable damage or something. If there is, ahmee's gotta bear the responsiblity. Got some kidney/bladder scan coming up this week too, they gave some medicine to clear my bowels the night before, and they're going to inject some substance into my veins to highlight my bloodstream in the x-ray. Ah! why?

The week to come:
Departing on friday for the UK, gotta pack my lugguage. But got that stupid scan the day before. Got driving lessons tmr at 11, going to book TP test soon. Have to return the library books before I leave. Got to cancel the original appointment for the scan tmr, my mother decided to bring me to a private clinic after the appointment was made.

Matthew's Birthday,
Photograph of Matthew's Birthday taken by his friend, alwin... He's birthday dinner was one of the most bizzarre. I went there thinking I won't know anyone, and it turned out that I knew about half of them vaguely, one of his church friend was from my JC, two of his other friends were my one-week-induction-program bmt mates, one of whom I used to talk to. He also invited the "Legendary Boon Leong" to quote him verbatim, whom I know from phys o. Matthew's Acount of His Birthday

HTTP Protocol.
Went to funan center before matthew's birthday on sunday. There was this very comprehensive computing bookstore on the 2nd level. Found this book HTTP: The definitive Guide by oreilly, browsed through it, and now it's ended up on my to-read list. Want to understand what kind of info is exchanged in the protocol, and how to access it.

I think I'm removing that seperate frame for by blog entries. It's actually harder to navigate the page with it, cos the mouse wheel does not work in that frame and it's difficult to aim for the scroll bars or the arrows. I'll get down to changing it soon.

For now the immediate tasks would be canceling my medical appointment with NUH, and pack my bag for the trip.

Another product of random thoughts - incoherent writing. Bah, but isnt that how the mind works?

FTT Tomorrow

Slacked at home the whole of today. Felt very lazy. But managed to develop a few parts of the room booking application. Finished the add user module, and the select date code. Also configured the php.ini file to support the mail function. For those who stumbled upon this site searching "smtp server and php.ini" on google: the smtp server parameter is that of my ISP and the sendmail_from parameter is the UserID for my ISP. Now I can send emails through my php code!!!

Brought my router down to the linksys office yesterday and got a replacement. A brand new linksys router!!! Probrably the cost producing an individual unit is very low, so it's more cost effective to replace a router than repair it. Also found out that the router has a 3 year warrenty.

Just got a call from my secondary school A-math teacher this afternoon, I had told her that I've finished NS and I'm free to help out in maths society. Anyway, I'm going down to SAS tmr at afternoon to help the students participating in some competition. It'll be a good opportunity to revisit the kind of maths questions i had faced in the past and see if the things I learnt in JC are of any use when it comes to secondary school maths competitions. I also hope to meet some of my old teachers, teachers like Micheal Lim and Lawrence Koh. Wow! It's been more than 5 years already!

Ok, got FTT tmr, and I haven't really studied yet... I'm counting on common sense to get me through...

IELTS down, FTT to go

Today was the last of my IELTS test, the speaking module... think I didn't do so well, hope I'd still be able to meet the criteria... The next test on the list would be my FTT: it's this thursday, and I haven't studied for it at all... That's the first item on today's to-do list...

My router is still spoilt, found out that I'd need to take it down to the linksys warehouse in tampines, near hougang... I'll be going down tmr... I never knew tampines was so near hougang. Anyway today while asking the office1 people how to get to the linksys warehouse, the salesperson recommended a local online street directory, aptly named Streetdirectory.com looks quite useful...

Also got to find a job... I've wanted to be a a relief teacher for a long time, got to call my school, and ask if they have vacancies, if not now then in the 3rd term.

Also considering being a php or web developer, but dont know how to find such jobs.

On another note, HCH has completed the beta version of his game... and boy it's impressive! I think it can soon match other games like utopia, and king of chaos... He's inspired me to continue pursuing the room booking system I'm making for church.
I'm also thinking of developing an online game, if I were to develop one, it would be based on economics...

A recap of the things to do:
  • Repair router
  • Study for FTT
  • call school up for relief teaching

My wireles router is down... called up the cisco help desk today to troubleshoot the problem, and they concluded that it was the modem problem. The call center seemed to be international, as the people spoke with different accents, and the number was very weird: 800-1204-280, definitely not local, the linksys website says that it is toll free, I'll cinfirm it when the phone bill arrives. I called 3 times, as the first two times I called with my HP, it was cut off after 5 minutes or so... Anyway, apparently the router cannot be detected, my computer is now connected directly to the modem, and as the router isn't functioning, my sis cant use the internet from her laptop... Gotta bring it to the shop along with the warrenty sometime next week.

Went to Ang Mo Kio library today also, borrowed 2 books:
In Search of Schrodinger's Cat, which I found later that it was published before I was born. &
Six Easy Pieces, I realised when I begun reading it that it was the first six chapters in the series 'Lectures on Physics' (which I already have), verbatim.
The book which I really wanted to get, Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!, was 'On Transit', it is also available at CCK Library. I'd be going to CCK tmr for Jason's birthday, hope I can catch it before someone else does...

And... I've successfully created the Jukebox! It's on my website... Works as I intended, but I've recieved reports from Ken that it did not work on her desktop computer, sigh... That's the problem with web design... It is simply too time consuming to write code that is competible with every combination of OS/Browser...

A few more webpages which I found...
Days Were The Those, a blog about NS contributed by people who have been through NS, stumbled upon it through matthew's blog.
PHP Reference: a php site with comprehensive function reference. Also has links to many sites affiliated with php.
There're are also a few new sites affiliated with SAS and SAJC brewing... I'm not sure if it'll work out. I've seen the page, and honestly it seems very haphazard, and looks like it won't be 'lively' for very long... if fact, it does not even seem active at all. I'll put them up anyway...
JC Saint's Portal, and
Saint Andrew's Online.

What's up:
I would be having my IELTS written exam tomorrow...
FTT next friday...
Gotta fix my router...

Wow! such a long post! i'm amazed at myself... I think I'm getting the hang of blogging... or simply too free since I ORD'ed...

Plans for My Website

Here are some very comprehensive references in their respective areas:

W3 Schools
MySQL Reference Manual

Will update my website if i find that I keep visiting their site.

Other things I want to do to my website:

  • reorganise my list of computer websites, it's getting quite messy...

  • add more essays in my website.

  • add music to it, in particular a 'Jukebox' where people can select the song they want to listen to. But this requires that I find a webhosting service, albeit small, without advertisements, or it will screw up the layout =[

Oh yes, one more thing: I found while reading Jiabin's blog that one of my ex-collegues, Nigel Kiong was featured in the New Papers for earning $30k a month from his business selling accessories. The Electric Newpaper made it difficult to access backdated articles, but I found a way around it through googles, hope the link does not die so soon. Anyway here it is: Nigel Kiong

Organising My Online Spaces

Now that I've ORD'ed, I'll be switching to my new blog to as a means to update my friends on my life.

However, I'd still be using this blog as a 'Jotter Blog' i.e. an online Jotter Book used to log, without much organization, things I may want to refer to in future, but may not be of much importance.

My webpage on the other hand, will continue to be used to organise the infomation that I have found to be important.

I am also playing with wordpress and php on this blogging site negamaki.com, I might use it as an online photoalbum in future...

My GOD is indeed Jehovah Jireh

I just received the reply from the Bursary Committee tonight, and I want to testify of GOD's providence. The burden on my parents will be very great if I study overseas, but GOD has shown through this bursary offer that HE will provide, and all I need to do is simply to follow HIS commands. I just pray that I would never fail to recognise GOD's faithfulness in my life, instead I would glorify HIM for HIS abundant blessings. I also pray that I'll trust HIM in every circumstance, and that I would be a faithful steward of the talents HE has entrusted to me. I am humbled by GOD's grace.

If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. Deuteronomy 28:1

sendmail, qmail, postfix, surgemail and whatnot

I've been exploring mail servers lately, and have come across the above terms, they are all mail servers... Just jotting down my findings in this entry for future reference.

I've been able to send my emails using some of smtp servers I've installed ( surgemail, and the IIS smtp server) through outlook, but whenever I try to send it through php using the mail function, the mail does not seem to get through even though it is free from any error messages. I'm not sure why, but I hope to resolve it so that I'd be able to send emails using php. I also intend, eventually, to be able to host email accounts on my mail server.

Other things I've learnt:
That "Qmail is a linux MTA and won't ever run on Windows.".
The origins of emails on howstuffworks.
I would also like to further explore surgemail.

I am now running the SMTP Server that comes with IIS, hoping to have a better understanding of how it works...

Enbarking on a Project

Yay! just got an assignment by pastor Cuixian! I have been tasked to create a room booking system, and I'm up to the challenge! one problem now will be to find out how to send mails using my web server. I have already devised a way to handle the room booking requests and approval, coding it would be challenging, but apart from the emailing part, I believe I have all the tools required to solve this problem using PHP and MySQL... Hopefully this system would eventually be implementable... If it happens, it'll be the first useful program I've written.

Using mcrypt functions

Setting up mcrypt was the easy part... Using their library functions proved to be much more tricky!

At first i seemed to have problems decrypting the encrypted data. For some reason, it randomly churns out gibberish... Then i managed to create a script that worked... But problems abounded when i tried to store the encrypted data in the contents of a cookie.

After some experimenting with scripts online, I found one that worked: here it is. I have not figured out their code yet, I'm just using it to achieve an end... Hopefully in time, I'd get down to figuring out exactly how it works.

mcrypt

Well, that's a php function to encrypt and decrypt data/strings... It took me a while to figure out how to use it. Turns out that you require the library to get it to work. this page was very helpful...

Yay! Successfully configured my router so that my server can be accessed from the www!

Just jotting this down just in case I forgot, and for the benifit of those who are having the same problem.

Ok, here's my background:
OS: Windows XP,
Server: Apache 2
Router: Linksys WRT54G

My problem was getting a webpage hosted on my webserver to be accessible online. After a lot of searching, I found the answer: you simply need to configure the router to forward requests to your computer. Here are the steps:
1) Configure your router by keying in it's IP address on your address bar. (The IP address can be either the Public or Private IP address). You can always find the public IP address from the linked site, or by typing (!IP) on msn msg :), and your router's Private IP address is usually 192.168.1.1 .
2) You will be prompted for the name and password. It is usually blank and admin respectively. You'll need some security features to configure such sensitive stuff.
3) Once you're in, you'll see the setup interface, access the 'applications and gaming' options. You'll see the words 'Port Forwarding'. Configure it according to the Private IP address of the computer your server is installed on (take note, this address will be reassigned by the router each time you restart the computer), and the Port. It has to be the same port which you configure Apache to listen to.

Now you're set! Your server can be viewed by anyone accessing your Public IP address!!!

Now I'll need to concern myself with the security issues :(

Effective Remedy for Oral Ulceration

Putting it simply: good treatment for mouth ulcers.

One thing that I hate most is mouth ulcers. Once, in the army, I triped during soc, over the 'step-up' bar, and fell face down into the sand and barb wire. I recieved lacerations to my lips and face and a lot of ulcers the mouth. The MO prescribed me a certain 'Trinolone Oral Paste', the packaging had Thai words on it, but it was very effective.

The chemical name for this drug is Triamcinolone acetonide, and apparently it is also some kind of hormone...

Just jotting this down just in case it comes in handy in future.

WooHoo!!! I've Successfully Installed Apache!!!

Finally, after ages of reconning, I've finally gotten Apache to work on my computer!!!

Thanks to HCH - His inspiration, which initiatiated this successful attempt at installing Apache;
and a VERY helpful webpage I found, which guides the Windows XP user on the exact configuration required to get php and cgi up and running, I have successfully configured Apache 2.0.53 to run on my computer!!!

I hope this sparks a rapid advancements in my understanding of server scripting like php and cgi... Time will tell, and this time i'm quite optimistic about it!!!

My life has just begun!!!!

Job Fishing

Went Job Fishing at a certain International Plaza beside Tanjong Pagar MRT Station today with my old JC friend ShaoKen... Was quite an adventure and I gained some experience points in job hunting... We went around all the job recruitment agencies in the building to submit our names, it kinda reminded me of my ol' scouting days doing job week...

At first, we did not really know what to do. Shaoken had asked me if I wanted to go for a job fair, and being rather free recently, I decided to give it a try. Later when I met him I found out that it wasn't a job fair we were going to, rather he meant looking for jobs at these job agencies. He had learnt from another friend that that was the way to look for jobs, having loss his monthly source of income since his SAF contract expired, he was getting desperate for a job.

So we arrived at the building. We looked up the directory for companies which looked like job agencies, took down their unit number, and off we were like tresure seakers with a map. We begun by seeking out the highest office on our list, with the intention of slowly making our way down. We followed the unit number, past a corridor of unwelcoming grey doors, and arrived at a grey door with the unit number. And it was shut, just like all the other doors along the corridor. Some of these doors even had signs outside stating "We are neither a Recruitment Agency nor a Job Agency" or something to that effect. Not knowing what to do - whether to knock the door, or to open the door, or to turn away altogether, Shaoken consulted his friend over the hand phone. His friend told him to knock the door and walk in. Hesitantly, we did as his friend said.

Behind the door was a small office which housed around 8 tables. We were met by a woman who gave us each a form to fill up. They asked for our personal particulars, education, previous salary, expected pay, prefered job location or address, and IT skills. It seems that this is the most essential ability, as every form we filled had this field. Not knowing what to write, we simply wrote "Microsoft Office Applications" as given in their example. The lady who recieved our forms politely told us that we will be contacted if there were any job vacancies, something which we would hear each time we finished an application.

So that was it... My first job application at a career agency. Now armed with the new found experience of applying for a job, we went on to seek out the other offices in our list. We found job agencies of different shapes and sizes. Some had glass doors with fountains, some had our IC's photocopied, some spanned two levels, and one even had a test to assess the rate of typing in words per minute(wpm). I can't remember what the agency's name was now... but there was a nifty trick I used to beat this test. The computer based assessment was kind enough to allow us to have a warm-up typing test before the actual test. During this warm-up test, we would be using exactly the same text as we would for the actual test. While I was taking the warm-up test, I wondered if it was possible to copy and paste the text we had typed. So I highlighted the text I had typed so far, and held down 'ctrl-c'. I continued typing as i didn't know when the time would run out. Then when we came to the actual test, I held on to 'ctrl-p' and WhallaH! The text appeared! HAHAHAHA... But I started laughing after that, so that hindered me from concentrating on the typing, and in the end, the computer calculated that I typed at 45 wpm. But it was an invaluable experience nevertheless... I hope no one from that company reads this blog and fix the bug... no one really reads this blog anyway... so this secret should be quite safe. Anyway, I blogging today to immortalise this event in my blog... Never since NS (and since blogging) have I been so proud of myself. Heh...

Ok, my purpose for blogging today is accomplished since I've recorded this event... getting tired, gonna sleep now...

Life After Army

Wow, the last time I blogged was before I went to india... I'm not a prolific writter, not a writter at all... Anyway, I've been on leave since I returned from India, I would only need to return to camp whenever I have SOC, cos I haven't passed my SOC, and I am now serving my last medical duty. In the past week, and in the days ahead, I will have more time at home to do everything I dreamt of doing back when I was stuck in camp.

However, I'm beginning to feel that once you cross over to the other side, you realise that the grass is not as green as you once thought. I've wanted for a long time to return to my alma matar to teach. When I was in the army, (I still am in the army, I haven't ORDed, but now I'm starting to taste freedom) and saw my sister teaching during her 6 months break between JC and university, I thought "I can't wait to be free from NS so that I can work as a relief teacher just like my sister." Now it seems that even though I am out of NS, I'd still not be able to realise this wish as the schools no longer need relief teachers. Sigh...

My greatest fear is that after I ORD I'd not spend my time meaningfully. I've already wasted a whole two years in NS, and I attribute the waste to my lack of freedom to choose what I want to pursue. And now, when I am granted the freedom, I lack the opportunity.

In the army, I experienced the feeling of being made to do things I utterly detest, and being unappreciated at that. Then, I really longed to be able to do something that I enjoyed, and which would benefit others. The result is that the work would be done well because I am good at it and I enjoy the process, while at the receiving end, the recipient would also benefit from my labour. And it'll be mutually benificial to both parties. I guess that was what Solomen meant when he said in Ecc 2:24
A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God,
.

At the moment, I'm looking out for such opportunities to occupy my available time. I hope that I'd eventually find a vacancy in a school. I also wish to put my admin and computer skills (or whatever little programing knowledge)to use, I'm hopeing to do it either in church or at REACH. And in doing so further hone my skills.

Ok, though I may be sounding very pessimistic about such a joyful, liberating occasion that is my ORD, there has been a few concrete, meaningful tasks which i am already pursuing. I've begun taking driving lessons, and I'm hopeing to pass it before my pdl expires in August. And I've also found a few tuition opportunities. But I still wish to try my hand at some mainstream work.

Ahhh!!! I'm just jotting down random thoughts, and verbalising my apprehension about ORDing... Or just feeling very bored doing duty on a Sunday, and writing a very long entry to make up for the lack of posts in the past month...

In the words of repeated monotony, blah!

A taste of ORD and going to India

The past week allowed me a taste of ORD life as I was clearing my off. Managed, during the week, to totally iron out the HTML and CSS code of, and find a new web host for my webpage! I'm pretty satisfied with the outcome. You may visit it here . I also begun my first driving lesson, and had a few tuition sessions with my cousin.

Anyway, I'm departing for india tmr, will be there for 3 weeks. After spending 6 weeks in the australlian outback, this trip aint that intimidating anymore. Looking forward to seeing the Taj mahal, but I'm a bit concerned about the hygine factor, it's definitely worst than in australia. Hopeing I will survive without getting diahorrea.
